Jewish Sukkot and Lulav rituals explained!
As a member of both Indigenous communities, Von Schlegel has experienced firsthand how Pueblo People and Jews share ritual practices of giving thanks for the food, land, knowledge and other gifts from our Creator. In particular, she believes what Jews do every Friday, as we ritually welcome in the “Messengers of Peace” to mark the beginning of Shabbat, resembles customary native rituals of welcoming spirits or ancestors.
“It is a completely similar practice, as Jews are also indigenous people,” she explained, noting that her Jewish beliefs align with Native beliefs, with separate expressions due to geography, tribal preference and the way those relationships have evolved. “It is not interfaith; it is intertribal,” she points out.
Von Schlegel believes that all Jewish holidays, and Sukkot in particular, have customs that resemble those of other indigenous cultures. All Native American groups orient themselves among their sacred directions and ritually utilize species (medicines). “We, as indigenous people, pray in the ways and languages of our ancestors as much as we are able. Jews do, too.”
When it comes to the question of Israel, the answer is clear to Von Schlegel: “We are indigenous to Israel because it is our ancestral homeland, home to the history and accomplishments of our people, the bodies and blood of our ancestors.” However, some anti-Zionist Jewish activists, such as CODEPINK National Co-Director Ariel Gold, have recently claimed that not all Jews are indigenous to Israel. She has personally disowned her indigenous ties to Israel, claiming that because her family lived in Spain in the 1400s, Spain is her indigenous homeland instead.
Von Schlegel believes that one can lose indigenous identity, but not by living in the Diaspora. “If they became a different identity and are no longer Jews, then they’re no longer indigenous. They’re whatever they became,” she said. “If they don’t pray for Israel, feel themselves a part of our people (in the greater sense—past, present and future generations) or have relationships with our ancestors there, if they don’t identify with our tribe…then they’re not.”
As an indigenous advocate, Von Schlegel takes issue with how anti-Zionists have tried to compare Palestinians to Native Americans. According to her, pro-Palestinian activists have visited numerous tribes in America to argue that their narratives are the same. “They are not,” she says, emphatically explaining that pro-Palestinian activists are co-opting the indigenous experience for their own political gain. She believes American Jews should be owning their identity as indigenous peoples, and building relationships with analogous communities.
“Jews are not only indigenous to Israel—we are indigenous peoples. We must remember that,” she noted. “Look into Native communities around your area, learn about them and their needs—connect with them. Understand how similar we are as indigenous peoples, and how we must work together.”
Von Schlegel says she speaks particularly to Jews who live in the Americas. “Native American battles for sovereignty, language reclamation, traditional food production, water protection, ecological preservation, religious expression and defining our modern realities through our own cultural lens not only reflect the same struggles and accomplishments of the Jewish people, but also positively benefit Jewish lives in the United States.”

Yom Kippur is a Canaan unique Jewish indigenous festival!
“YOM KIPPUR,” the day of ritual and moral cleanness and self-denial, has become the climax of the Jewish High Holy Days. This day is the hope for freshness and new beginning for individuals and for the collective. Once a year, on the tenth of the seventh month (Tishre), the high priest atones (כפר) for impurities of the Temple and the altar, and at the same time also for sins of all the people: himself, his close family, his priestly clan, and all Israel (Lev 16:10-11, 16-19, 21-22, 24, 29-33; 23:27; Num 29:7; Exod 30:10). In fact, atonement of the people is the core of the Yom Kippur ritual (Lev 16:6-11, 15, 17, 21-24, 30-32), while the atonement of the Temple and the altar is mentioned only secondarily (Lev 16:16, 18-20, 33).
The biblical text states: “For on that day [shall the priest] make an atonement for you, to cleanse you, that you may be clean from all your sins before the Lord” (Lev 16:30).[1] Despite the evident meaning of the term “all your sins,” the rabbis learn from the phrase “before the Lord” that Yom Kippur atones for sins “between man and God” (בין אדם למקום) only, and this too, only under certain conditions.[2] For the sins “between man and his fellow” (בין אדם לחברו), one must appease his fellow and request forgiveness. In case he or she harmed another, he or she must pay compensation or return the stolen goods.[3]….
Furthermore, because of the importance of the day, its ritual is to be performed almost entirely by the high priest, that is, by one who stood on the peak of the priesthood hierarchy (Lev 16:1-28, 32-33). Yom Kippur was considered a High Holiday by the Qumranites; the Sadducees, the Pharisees and their successors, the Rabbinites;[6] it remains central to the Karaites (ca. 750 C.E. and on), the Samaritans, and in contemporary Judaism. …

Rosh Ha’Shanah or “Yom Teruah” is the New Year of the Seasons, which occurs on 1 Tishri (in Sep) of each year. The purpose of this ten day festival, which ends with Yom Kippur, is to mark the end of the summer growing season upon the Land of Israel and the beginning of a new seasonal year. Autumn, the seasonal evening before the night of winter, has arrived. And, from Rosh ha’Shanah to Yom Kippur is the period of teshuvah, returning to our Indigenous Jewish ways, where personal self-reflection and assessment is made.
The hoped for outcome is that we will be found worthy of yet another year of life, renewed as a people, and individually, as the seasons are renewed. “Ha’Shem willing”, we will find ourselves in the book of life for yet another year, so that we may strive once again to improve upon our behaviors and character traits in preparation for this year to follow.
The agrarian “New Year” festival is the day of marking, the “day of blowing”. The Shofar (the ram’s horn) is blown loudly on the first day throughout the Land of Israel (in diasporas, the first two days), and the next seven days are days of deep personal and communal introspection on one’s life over the last year and seeking peaceful resolution and emunah (unrelenting commitment) with those we have issues with.
Yom Kippur is the festival day of Celebration of Renewal and Fertility, and is observed on 10 Tishri (in Sep/Oct) of each year. Yom Kippur is also known as the “Day of Atonement” – an all day introspection about how one has lived socially and personally throughout the now concluded last year, and most Jews fast all day on this particular day.
Yom Kippur is the day that, by Jewish Indigenous tradition, the “G-d” of the Judean land and the people of Israel observes the people and decides who will live throughout this new year and who will not. So, we Jews introspect and supplicate, so that we ALL are written into “the book of life” for this new year on this Yom Kipur day.
This holiday is also an ancient fertility celebration. Our Jewish people’s legends teach that there are two days of the year that are the most joyous, Yom Kippur and the fifteenth of Av. That on these days the young unmarried women went out and danced in the vineyards, with the intention of attracting an available man to be married to.
Because Yom Kippur is ALSO the day that the national Jewish temple, the Beit ha’Mikdash, is being ritually cleansed through purification rites, the sanctity of attracting a marriage partner on this day was considered especially blessed amongst Jewish Israelis.
The day of Yom Kippur concludes with the loud blowing of the shofar before evening arrives, signifying that our teshuvah (our RETURNING to our Jewish people’s Canaan indigenous lifeways) has been accepted and that atonement has been achieved for our human failings.
