Simple Facts about Palestine!
“On or about August 10, 2026, New York Magazine published its multi-article package titled “Habibi City” (also framed under the broader heading “SWANA, New York”). The package presented the recent cultural visibility of New Yorkers with roots in Southwest Asia and North Africa as a vibrant and affirmative development. That celebration, however, was constructed through a series of narrative choices rooted in antizionist racism that systematically erase Jewish history, invert the genocide of October 7, and demand public accountability.
“The article explicitly framed this cultural flowering as emerging from “the pain of the genocide in Gaza” and as something that “bloomed” out of post-October 7 resistance. In doing so, it performed a textbook instance of genocide inversion, as documented by Adam Louis-Klein in “Rwanda, Israel and the Inversion of ‘Genocide’” (The Wall Street Journal, July 22, 2026). The October 7 genocide—the deliberate massacre, sexual violence, and hostage-taking by antizionist militias—was actively erased.
“The article defined belonging to the “SWANA community” by positioning “Zionism” as a form of oppression to be “faced” alongside xenophobia and Islamophobia. One accompanying piece reduced the State of Israel to “the land mass currently called Israel.” These antizionist formulations suggest that eliminating Israelis, a protected national group under the Genocide Convention, would be legitimate.

Shakshouka is NOT a “Palestinian” dish – STOP APPROPRIATING!
In the light of the full moon 🌕 our SWANA Indigenous voices cry out against our ERASURE in the West! The Middle East and North Africa has never been, religiously, ethnically, or ideologically uniform. Our communities lived continuously in the Middle East and North Africa for over 2,500 years, before the emergence of Islam.
SWANA Indigenous peoples have endured conquest, dhimmitude, massacre, or expulsion at the hands of the region’s dominant powers, experiences entirely missing from the “Habibi City” New York Magazine feature (August 10, 2026) that presents that dominant culture (Arab/Arabized Muslims), transplanted to New York, as the marginalized party. Here is the first moral inversion: a “decolonial framework” that treats the heirs of one of history’s great imperial expansions (the Islamic Caliphates) as the colonized, and the region’s ACTUAL indigenous minorities as invisible, or, in our case, as presumptive colonizers of our own homeland.
SWANA Indigenous peoples are: Amazigh, Armenians, Assyrians, Baha’is, Balochis, Bedouins, Chaldeans, Coptic Christians, Druze, JEWS (never left Mizrahi and Sephardi, and Ashkenazi hundreds of years long ago returned), Kurds, Mandaean Sabians (from whom the Arab “Palestinians” appropriatd the fishnet shemagh from for their post-1964 “Palestinian keffiyeh”), Yazidis, Zoroastrians, etc!
The indigenous Jewish communities of the Middle East and North Africa – Sephardic and Mizrahi Jews – have had a DAILY living presence in Egypt, Iraq, Iran, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Syria, Tunisia, Turkiye, Yemen, and across the region (pre-1948) that LITERALLY predates the Arab conquests by more than a millennium. SWANA is a geography term, and your Indigenous erasure “Habibi City” feature defines it as an ideology of common Islamized BELIEFS, New York Magazine!
Following the logic of your own “reporting”, the definition of a legitimate SWANA person/community in your AHISTORICAL Western “identity politics” rendition becomes unmistakable:
Geography is not the membership criterion; politics, ideology, and religion are. A South Asian Muslim belongs by faith and conviction. A Mizrahi Jew whose grandparents were born in the region, expelled from their country of origin, and who carries the region in her language, liturgy, and kitchen belongs only upon disavowal of the movement through which her family survived. In your telling, anti-Zionism is the central organizing principle of the contemporary “SWANA community”, and the price of admission to it effectively marginalizes – really, ERASES – the diverse Indigenous peoples of the Middle East from your narratives, peoples who have lived in the region for thousands of years but who do NOT identify with the anti-Zionist hate movement.
In the twentieth century, close to one million Jews were driven from the Arab and Muslim world, frequently under laws that criminalized Zionism itself. In countries throughout the Arab world Zionism was made a capital offense, over 3,000 Jews were imprisoned, and Jews were stripped of citizenship and property as “Zionists”; across the region, families were dispossessed, imprisoned, or forced to flee under duress. In the political Zionism of the 20th century, we asserted our own indigeneity after living for millennia as second-class and, finally, exiled citizens of the lands of our birth.
ZIONISM is literally historically and factually “Jewish self-determining sovereignty upon Zion, our sacred ancestral Canaan land of Israel”, in which Jews are no longer victims suffering (often violent) dhimmi-ghetto status under Christians and Muslims (and, now, Marxists , too). The Zionist movement that your “Habibi City” feature files alongside xenophobia and Islamophobia is the very REASON hundreds of thousands of those Middle East and North Africa indigenous Jewish refugees had somewhere to go, and the reason their descendants, today the majority of Israel’s Jewish population, exist as communities at all.

The CUISINE your racistly anti-Indigenous feature celebrates makes the point vividly. Food is one of the truest records a people keeps of where it has been. The dishes in your pages were also carried out of Baghdad, Sana’a, Cairo, and Casablanca by refugees who left with little else and they survive as living traditions rather than museum pieces because those refugees had a country to carry them to. Your food coverage goes further still: it prints, without comment, a featured restaurant’s menu map on which Israel does not appear at all, retitled “Discover Palestine,” and it refers in the magazine’s own editorial voice to “the land mass currently called Israel.”
It reports, with evident satisfaction from one interviewee, that Israeli-owned restaurants are now retreating behind the euphemism “Mediterranean” – some, by your own account, after vandalism. A feature devoted to the pride of naming oneself openly treats the return of Jews to concealment as a development to be savored. That is the second – DISGUSTING – moral inversion.
Your NYM “Habibi City” feature applies the label “Arab Jew” WITHOUT qualification. Most Mizrahi Jews reject it and in current usage it functions largely to SEVER Jewish identity from Israel. The Tunisian-born sociologist and philosopher Albert Memmi answered the label half a century ago, responding to Muammar Gaddafi’s offer to welcome Jews back as “Arabs like us” after they had been brutally ethnically cleansed.
The identity was refused to us when we lived in Arab lands. It is now conferred on us in New York, WITHOUT our consent, because it is politically convenient: an “Arab Jew” is a Jew whose story can be told without Israel. The great majority of Mizrahi and Sephardic Jews were never asked whether we accept the label. Instead, your writers located the small minority who embrace it, presented them as representative (in other words, tokenized them), and left the rest of us to discover that our identity had been defined by others on our behalf.
THIS is ERASURE of Middle Eastern, Southwest Asian, and African Jews that is presenting itself in the United States of Colonial America 🇺🇸 as “representation”! We are not asking to be tolerated as exceptions to an ideological rule. We are asking to be RECOGNIZED as what we are: indigenous peoples of the region.

The Palestinian Thobe – Islamic Robe or Weapon?
The Palestinian ثوبة (“thawba”) has been weaponised ever since the Jewish people’s forced decolonisation of the land of Israel for our Canaan indigenous self-determining sovereignty in 1948.
Never did the Arab Palestinian colonisers imagine that the Jewish people would shake off the oppressive yoke of dhimmitude to Muslim occupiers of Southwest Asia. How dare these Jewish infidels enforce equality between Indigenous and Coloniser?!
It was such a shock, our Indigenous resistance that miraculously turned into Israeli sovereignty upon historic Israel, that a 19th century introduced Islamic dress robe for Arab women would become a weapon that proudly displays “intifada” expressions against our Canaan indigenous people!
The colonial Arabic word thawba (ثوبة) is derived from the root word ‘thawb’ (ثوب), meaning garment or clothing, or alternatively from the concept of return and repentance (tawba/توبة). The word carries connotations of renewal, restoration, and spiritual return.

Yeshayahu (Isaiah) 52:1-2 begins this narrative that extends into 53, “Awaken, awaken, put on your strength, O Zion; put on the garments of your beauty, Jerusalem the Holy City, for no longer shall the uncircumcised or the unclean continue to enter you. Shake yourselves from the dust, arise, sit down, O Jerusalem; free yourself of the bands of your neck, O captive daughter of Zion.”
Zechariah 12:1,9-10 clearly states, “The prophecy of the word of Y-HWH concerning Israel: And it shall come to pass on that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come upon Jerusalem. And I will pour out upon the house of David and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplications. And they shall look to me because of those who have been thrust through [with swords], and they shall mourn over it as one mourns over an only son and shall be in bitterness, therefore, as one is embittered over a firstborn son.”
Yeshayahu (Isaiah) 9:5 misused by Christians to refer to their Roman deity, “For a child has been born to us [the inhabitants of Jerusalem, who were darkened by their concern (of falling into the hands) of Sennacherib], a son given to us, and the authority is upon his shoulder, and the wondrous adviser, the mighty God, the everlasting Father, called his name [king Hezekiah’s name], “the prince of peace”.”
How DARE you Missionaries for Christ change our Jewish people’s Canaanite Hebrew language writings to mean your false God in place of Am Yisrael! The suffering servant is clearly defined in the passages itself. It is Jacob/Israel (the Jewish people as a whole), full stop.
