A coloniser asks what can still be extracted from the land before he moves on. A people returning home asks what it can become for future generations. One exploits the land; the other builds a future upon it.
That distinction matters when Israel is described as a colonial enterprise.
The Jewish kingdoms of Israel and Judah existed centuries before Christianity or Islam. The land was later ruled by Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Greeks and Romans. After crushing the Jewish Bar Kokhba revolt in 135 CE, Rome renamed Judea Syria Palaestina in an attempt to weaken its Jewish identity. Byzantines, Arab caliphates, Crusaders, Mamluks, Ottomans, and finally the British followed.
These empires were not identical, but under almost all of them the land remained neglected. Arab towns and villages existed, alongside Jewish communities that maintained an unbroken presence. Yet for most rulers, the territory was merely a province, military corridor, source of taxation or pilgrimage destination. It was not their national home. Vast areas therefore remained poor, barren, underdeveloped and ravaged by malaria.
The modern Jewish return fundamentally changed that relationship.
From the 1880s onward, Jews arriving from Europe did not come as agents of a European empire. They came as refugees returning to their ancestral land. They purchased property, established farms and towns, revived Hebrew, founded schools, hospitals and universities, drained malaria-infested swamps and made previously uninhabitable land cultivable.
After Israel’s establishment, a growing share of its immigrants were Jews expelled or driven from Arab and Muslim countries. Those arriving from Iraq, Yemen, Egypt, Syria, Libya, Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia can hardly be called European colonists. They were Middle Eastern refugees absorbed by the world’s only Jewish state while Israel itself was poor, besieged and struggling under food rationing.
Jewish modernisation created jobs, higher wages, healthcare and infrastructure, attracting Arab workers and migrants from Syria, Transjordan, Egypt and Lebanon. British records documented this movement, although much of the Arab population’s growth during the Mandate resulted from natural increase. Jewish indigeneity does not require the exaggerated claim that every Arab had only recently arrived.
The central point is that Zionism did not conquer an Arab state and reduce it to ruins. It built a thriving agricultural and economic centre in a neglected Ottoman province, later governed under the British Mandate. The opportunities it created attracted both Jewish refugees and Arab migrants.
Arab society in the land was real, and its inhabitants had local attachments. A distinct Palestinian national identity, however, began to develop mainly during the British Mandate period, largely in opposition to Jewish self-determination. Before then, people generally identified through religion, tribe, Ottoman citizenship, Arab identity or ties to Greater Syria. No independent Palestinian state had existed, nor had any sustained national movement demanded one.
Nor does the name “Palestine” establish ancient national continuity. The name derives from Philistia and is associated with the Philistines, an Aegean people who fought the Israelites and later disappeared as a distinct population. Modern Palestinians are not their descendants merely because they adopted a related geographical name. A political label is not a family tree.
The decisive twentieth-century development was the restoration of Jewish sovereignty. Under centuries of Muslim rule, Jews were tolerated, at best, as a subordinate minority. An independent Jewish state shattered a regional order built on Arab and Islamic predominance.
That is why the conflict intensified when Jewish sovereignty returned. For centuries, the land attracted little international concern while it remained an impoverished province under Muslim or imperial rule. But once an indigenous non-Muslim people regained independence and began transforming the country, resistance was recast as a national struggle. Religious hostility, political rejectionism, and the refusal to accept Jewish sovereignty were wrapped in the language of liberation.
In 1947, the Jewish leadership accepted partition. The Arab leadership rejected it and chose war. The Arab state proposed by the United Nations did not fail to emerge because the Jews rejected coexistence. It failed because Arab leaders rejected the existence of a sovereign Jewish state beside it.
Colonisers arrive from somewhere else and ultimately belong somewhere else. Jews returned in the name of Jerusalem. They revived their language, cultivated the soil, built cities and institutions, absorbed millions of refugees, and prepared not for temporary rule, but for a permanent future.
Empires repeatedly conquered this land, exploited it, and moved on. The Jews came home, brought it back to life, and will never again abandon it.
From 11 to 25 July 2000, at Camp David, Yasser Arafat was offered the framework for what Palestinian leaders had claimed to want for decades: a state in Gaza and most of the West Bank, land swaps, and a capital in East Jerusalem.
Yasser Arafat rejected it, produced no viable counterproposal, and preserved the conflict. Bill Clinton warned that he was leading his people and the region towards catastrophe.
Weeks later, the Second Intifada began, bringing suicide bombings, shootings, and the deliberate murder of Israeli civilians.
This was not a dispute over a few percentage points. It exposed the central truth of the Palestinian national movement: its dominant current has never been about creating a Palestinian state. It has been about denying the legitimacy, permanence, and sovereignty of the Jewish one.
That rejection belongs to a longer regional tradition. Arabization and Islamization were not benign cultural exchanges.
Across the Middle East and North Africa, conquest was followed by legal subordination, forced assimilation, dispossession, expulsion, and the steady reduction of ancient peoples to tolerated minorities in their own ancestral lands.
Israel broke that order. Its unforgivable act was not merely that it existed, but that Jews had regained the power to govern themselves in their own land.
Mark Twain travelled through Ottoman Palestine in 1867 as part of the Quaker City expedition. Two years later, he published his account in The Innocents Abroad, or The New Pilgrims’ Progress.
At the end of Chapter LVI, he wrote
“Palestine is desolate and unlovely.. It is a hopeless, dreary, heart-broken land.” He described barren hills, desert-like valleys and a landscape marked by “limitless desolation.”
In Chapter XLVII, he wrote of travelling through a “desolate country whose soil is rich enough, but is given over wholly to weeds,” adding that they encountered only three people along that stretch. He portrayed the land as neglected, sparsely populated, and desolate.

A preacher named Darby came up with it in the 1830s, and it spread through the Scofield Reference Bible which printed his reading in the margins so people absorbed it as scripture.
“It’s pieced together from scattered verses out of context, some Daniel, some Ezekiel and Zechariah, Paul’s ‘caught up in the clouds’ line, plus the dream imagery of Revelation, none of which lay this out sequentially in plain language, and Revelation itself was apocalyptic writing for [Jewish pre-]Christians under Roman persecution, not a roadmap for the future.”

We ALL know that ONLY the Indigenous people make the land blossom, because the land-god of the land assigns this unique responsibility to the Indigenous people born from the land! The land itself knows, too, and truly comes to life only by Indigenous hands. The Canaan land of Israel is the PERFECT example of this, demonstrated by MENA Jews in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s with our land and waters sovereignty projects under the Ottoman empire occupation.
Because we Jews were restoring our Indigenous people’s land of Israel for self-determining sovereignty, this is the VERY reason for the British-Hashemite 🇬🇧🇵🇸 militarized alliance and occupation of the land of Israel during WW1, in order to divide all of Southwest Asia into Hejaz Arabia’s Hashemite royal family 🇵🇸 ruled colonial nations! These Arab colonizer flags –> colonial Jordan 🇵🇸🇯🇴, colonial Syria 🇸🇾, and colonial Iraq 🇮🇶 <– do NOT represent the occupied and daily terrorized SWA Indigenous peoples!
