“If the Torah was only for Israel, why was a mixed multitude standing at Sinai?”
A great question! Where does Torah say that the mix multitudes that followed the people of Israel back to our collective Canaan indigenous peoples’ land stayed with and joined Israel at Mount Horeb/Sinai?
Torah teaches: “You are all standing this day before Y-HWH, your god, the leaders of your tribes, your elders and your officers, every man of Israel…”. Moshe was talking to the Jewish people directly, full stop. Non-Jews are not obligated to the covenant, even if he/she fulfills the 613 mitzvot. Those who “sojourn” within the nation of Israel are only obligated to fulfilling the seven Noahide laws, full stop.
The “mixed multitude” was other Canaan peoples returning with our Canaan people. The Torah is ONLY for Israel, the seven Noahide laws are for everyone else. The concept of “one law” for Indigenous citizens (the Jews) and foreign settlers (non-Jews) is a sovereignty issue.
This is why Arab Israelis have equal rights in modern Israel and these post-1948 politically land-squatting Arab non-citizens (who call themselves Palestinians since 1964) do NOT have equal rights.
Accepting Arabs and Europeans who are land-squatting upon sovereign decolonised Israeli land would mean the end to Jewish sovereignty upon our ancestral Canaan land of Israel. This is the fundamental goal of the Palestinians and their United Nations of Arab-European Colonial nations supporters.
What are the seven Noahide laws? A great question! They are: Do not murder. Do not steal. Do not worship false gods. Do not be sexually immoral. Do not eat a limb removed from a live animal. Do not curse God. Set up courts and bring offenders to justice.
Saul of Tarsus (Paul the Apostle) taught non-Jews WRONG, when he said that Jesus died to save the non-Jews from observance of the Brit between Jews and Y-HWH. Non-Jews were never under this Canaan indigenous nation covenant with our land-G-d! Jesus the Jew did not die at the hands of the Romans to “free” the non-Jews, full stop.
We will try to be respectful when we explain Saul of Tarsus and his intentions. Paul the Apostle never personally knew Jesus the Jew and considered Jesus of Jerusalem lore to be a “god” in living flesh (which is idolatry, full stop). He created Christianity with non-Jews outside of Israel (Judea) fully around this concept.
NOWHERE in his writings does Saul/Paul show any knowledge of the stories of Jesus that were kept by the Jerusalem sect. If the historical Jesus were to be shown the Pauline scriptures, and the theological writings of the Church Fathers that arose from them, he would be horrified.
Marion of Sinope with his seven letters of Paul and his new – very popular – theology of Jesus the god-in-flesh “Christ” taught that Y-HWH god is a tribal deity, and that Jesus of Nazareth had revealed in his coming a totally new and superior god. He further taught early Aegean “Christians” that the Jewish writings do *not* prophesize of the coming of Jesus, and that a Jewish messiah is still in the future for Jews.
To reiterate, non-Jews are allowed by Y-HWH to live under the same national covenant as citizens, yes. But non-Jews are only obligated to the seven Noahide laws. This is why churches devoted to the northern Aegean created Christian god and mosques devoted to the southern Arabian created generic god (Allah) are allowed to exist within the land of sovereign Israel. This is why non-Jews can be Israeli citizens!
There are only two ways to be a Jew according to the covenant between our Jewish people and our land-G-d, Y-HWH, ruler of Israel. If you are born into a legal Jewish family, then you are born Jew. If you are legally ruled a Jew by a Jewish court of law, then you are a “Jew” from that moment forward. The rest are non-Jews, REGARDLESS how you might self identify.
The Torah is our Jewish people’s sacred ancestral Canaan writings. We are an agrarian based ethno-religious people, NOT a “faith” religion. Rambam taught what Jews and early Christians taught – a physical resurrection of those who died for the Jewish people’s survival from occupying Rome (aka, colonizers) to experience life again in the world to come HERE on planet Earth, the age of the mashiach rule. Jesus Through JEWISH Eyes — A Totally Different Story!
“After 2,000 years of silence, hostility, or indifference, a growing number of Jewish scholars have begun to engage with Jesus, not as the Messiah, not as a divine figure, but as a Jewish teacher worth understanding on his own terms.
This movement began in the 19th century with Jewish enlightenment thinkers who argued that Jesus should be reclaimed as a figure in Jewish history, rather than surrendered entirely to Christianity.
The reformed Rabbi Steven Wise called Jesus the apex and acme of Jewish teaching, arguing that to forget that Jesus was a Jew is to forget the Jewish heritage that preceded him. The philosopher Martin Buber wrote extensively about Jesus from a Jewish perspective, treating him with deep respect while maintaining the fundamental Jewish position that he was not the Messiah.
In the 20th and 21st centuries, this trend has intensified. The scholar Amy Jill Lavine, a Jewish professor of New Testament studies at Vanderbilt University, has written extensively about Jesus as a figure who can only be properly understood within the context of first century Judaism. She argues that both Christians and Jews benefit from seeing Jesus in his Jewish context.
Christians gain a deeper understanding of the man they worship, and Jews recover a figure who has been stolen from them by history!
Rabbi Irving Greenberg described Jesus as a failed messiah, not as an insult, but as a specific theological category, someone who had the right values and upheld the Covenant, but did not achieve the final redemption that Jewish theology requires.
The 18th century Rabbi Jacob Emd went even further, arguing that Jesus was a righteous, traditional Jew who never dreamed of destroying the Torah. Emd believed that the seemingly anti-nomeian teachings attributed to Paul in the New Testament were meant only for Gentiles who are obligated under Jewish law only to observe the seven Noahide laws, not the full 613 mitzvot of the Torah.
This interpretation, if accepted, would mean that Jesus and his original Jewish followers were operating entirely within the boundaries of Jewish law and that the break with Judaism came later after Jesus’s death when Gentile followers reinterpreted his teachings in ways he never intended.
Perhaps the most striking Jewish assessment of Jesus came from Maimonides, the great Sephardi medieval philosopher and legal authority who wrote in his Mishneh Torah that while Jesus was not the Messiah, both Christianity and Islam served God’s larger purpose by spreading monotheism and moral law across the world.
[Note, Moses ben Maimon – aka, Maimonides, Rambam – was the first Jewish monotheist. It took centuries for the Jewish people to abandon normative henotheism, monolatry to one god, in an embracement of this modern pantheistic monotheism where all human names of God reference only the Creator god of the universe.]
The name of Jesus for the Jewish people carries the weight of 2,000 years of persecution carried out in his name! It carries the memory of Crusades, Inquisitions, pogroms, and a European-Arab multi-continent Holocaust that was made possible in part by centuries of Christian teaching – that blamed “the Jews” for the death of Jesus.
No amount of scholarly reclamation can erase that history! And no interfaith dialogue, however sincere, can proceed honestly without acknowledging this. The most famous Jew in history became the symbol of a theology-based faith that persecuted his own people for two millennia. It’s the full moon 🌕 of Iyyar, 5786, so time to teach IN THE LIGHT! Question: Why is it so difficult for Christians and Muslims to acknowledge that there are two creation stories in our Jewish people’s Torah?
