Remember: there is more than one way to fast.
Here’s why, and how:
As Rambam famously taught, halakha is written for the majority, while recognizing that there will always be a minority for whom a given law doesn’t fully work. Over the years, halakha developed ways to “plug those holes,” offering alternative avenues for those who cannot fulfill a mitzvah in its ideal form.
So when it comes to today’s fast, there are three legitimate ways to participate:
- The ideal: Fast the entire day.
- Second best: If you cannot fast all day, fast part of the day. Halakha values what it calls a ta’anit sha’ot (תענית שעות) — fasting for several hours. For example, you might skip food until noon or early afternoon.
- The alternative: For those who cannot fast at all, some poskim recommend redeeming the fast with money. The idea: calculate what you typically spend on food in a day, and give that amount to someone poor and hungry. (No cutting corners — yes, that includes the fancy latte and overpriced salad 🙂).
Tzom kal — whichever version you adopt.
And most importantly: שנשמע ונתבשר בשורות טובות וכל הרשעה כולה כעשן תכלה — may we hear and share only good news, and may all wickedness vanish without a trace.”
