I learned about KKK town in Florida, was declared a “white” person BY A “black” person, who hand CORRECTED the “race” part of my application for a Driver License.
This was back in the early 2,000’s CE. And NOTHING has really changed, rather it has just become more socially and publicly open. The island world that I came from was majority brown and extremely “racially” mixed.
There, I was a victim of police brutality, simply because I was poor as fuck and, in the wrong places (the not disenfranchised areas), vulnerable for being so troubled and struggling in life.
So, when I came to this American continent, I first ended up living in a white trash ghetto of sorts. Then, by necessity, I moved across the Southern USA to a more familiar brown Texas ghetto.
Sure, a bit more brown than it was back in the islands – and QUITE a culture shock (both of them!) – but naturally the same in some ways.
Sure, after having received my official “white” card in Florida and being an Islander in upbringing, I understood why some treated me as “popo” just for being around.
Never in my life did I see myself as “white”, just because of my Sefardi mixed “Ginger” skin, hair, and eye colors. And, until I settled into America 🇺🇸, I had no lived understanding of the “N”-word.
Learning about this, drove fear into me that – as a foreigner absorbing USA culture – I would be infected by this USA racism, and become like the “whites” in mouth through dementia in old age, because of my skin color!
Yes, when settling into the USA, I became extremely aware of USA systemic racism AND its affect upon immigrants. Thankfully, I have adapted inwardly to protect myself from this outward social influence!
You can take the Indigenous out of their land, but you can NEVER take the Indigeneity out of the person – UNLESS you’ve experienced what kidnapped Africans experienced as chattel slaves in the United States of America 🇺🇸.
White people did NOT build this colonial nation called the United States of America. It literally was their African slaves who built this nation by force FOR the social, economic, and political privileged of “white” American 🇺🇸 them.
As an Indigenous oriented human being, I recognize that “whites” take full credit for what “blacks” created for them and, still yet, “whites” are NOT taking responsibility to bring “blacks” into an equal social table of equality within their successfully established colonial nation.
More so, this is true for the STILL surviving actual Indigenous peoples/nations upon the land called America 🇺🇸🇨🇦 – who are the MOST disenfranchised by BOTH the collective “whites” and the “blacks” of America!

Mrs. Bransdorfer (MB): Good evening, Rabbi Katz.
Rabbi Katz (RK): Good evening. What’s going on?
MB: I have a shaila.
RK: Wonderful! As you know, I love shailos—it’s the best part of the Rabbinate. What’s the question? Is it about fasting on Yom Kippur? Isn’t it a little early for that?
MB: No, it’s about Rosh HaShanah. Actually, about erev Rosh HaShanah.
RK: Ah, not too soon for that. Although honestly, I can’t imagine what shaila could come up about erev Rosh HaShanah. I’m intrigued.
MB: Well, here’s the story. As you know, Rabbi, I’ve been the head of the Beis Shprintza girls’ high school for the last 15 years, and erev Rosh HaShanah always makes me uneasy.
RK: “Uneasy”? Why?
MB: Because of this. We do hatarat nedarim with the girls. It’s a lovely little ritual that helps them enter the spirit of Rosh HaShanah. Quiet, yes, but meaningful and powerful in its subdued way.
RK: That sounds beautiful. So what’s the problem?
MB: The problem is that hatarat nedarim requires a beit din of three. Presumably, those three have to be men, and that undermines the experience in two ways:
In an all-girls school, we don’t always have three observant men available on campus.
Even when we do, their presence changes the atmosphere. The ritual could be such a bonding spiritual experience for the girls, but the men’s presence makes them hold back. They feel self-conscious.
RK: So what’s the shaila?
MB: The shaila is: must the three people be men? Or can women also annul vows?
RK: Of course women can!
MB: Really? Is that so? Did you ever write a teshuva laying out the arguments le’hatir?
RK: No, absolutely not. I don’t need to write a teshuva. It’s my default assumption. If anyone wants to argue that it’s not allowed, they should be the ones to write a teshuva proving it. Absent that, I assume it’s muttar.
In the absence of explicit evidence to the contrary, our baseline should be that women are included in ritual life—not excluded.
MB: Fascinating! Thank you so much, Rabbi.
Half an hour later.
MB: Sorry to bother you again, Rabbi. I shared your psak with our posek, and they were shocked. Apparently, R. Akiva Eiger says explicitly that women cannot annul other people’s vows. Were you aware of that?
RK: Of course I was.
MB: So what do you say to that?
RK: Nu, nu!
MB: “Nu, nu”? What do you mean?
RK: I mean—so what? R. Akiva Eiger is a towering figure, but he’s still one opinion. Important, yes, but not the final word. Halakha isn’t decided by who speaks loudest or earliest, but by weighing all the voices. Unless there’s overwhelming consensus, one stringent view doesn’t automatically exclude women from participating.
