Today is 1st day of lunar month Tamuz, 5785 🌒. Tamuz תמוז is the 10th month of our native civil Jewish year (11th on leap years) and the 4th month of the ritual seasonal year.
In the midst of all the horrors of war, in the midst of all lashing out and targeting hatreds, this JIRA Admin had a “baruch ha’Shem” moment before sunset to express for this new Jewish lunar month of Tamuz.

At first sight, I felt familiarity, smiled, and I embraced the stranger at my door. I fully understand the lived FEAR of many diaspora Jews around this European (and Arab) conquered diaspora world. But, all who knock are NOT necessarily “the enemy”!
We sat for a good two hours, at least (admittedly, I have no sense of clock time without a clock), just talking with each other – human to human. He learned quite a bit about me and my Sephardi ancestral history, and I learned a lot about his Pakistani Muslim upbringing in a European nation diaspora. He really got the best benefit out of this, because native Jews are but 0.002 percent of the human population of planet Earth.

Yes, Christianity existed in parts of Africa before European colonization. Christianity reached North Africa in places like Egypt, Carthage, Ethiopia, and Nubia within the first few centuries after Jesus’s death.
But Africa is a whole-ass continent, not a country. Saying Christianity existed in Africa before colonization doesn’t mean it was widespread or that it replaced indigenous African belief systems. Most West and Central African societies, the regions where enslaved Africans were taken from, did NOT practice Christianity before colonization. They practiced traditional spiritual systems rooted in their own cosmologies, ancestors, orisha, and spirits.
People say Christianity existed in Africa before colonization and slavery as a defense of Black Christian identity. They’re often trying to sever Christianity from white supremacy. That impulse romanticizes Christianity as inherently African or liberatory. It’s not. It ignores how the version most of us got was violently retooled for slavery. And it glosses over the fact that Christianity replaced, suppressed, and criminalized ancestral African religions.
Also: not all Christianities are created equal. The Ethiopian Orthodox Church is not the same as the Christianity pushed by European missionaries. Coptic Christianity is not the same as Puritan Protestantism or Catholic conquistadors. The version of Christianity that reached enslaved Africans in the Americas was heavily filtered through white supremacy, colonialism, and capitalist exploitation.
Most Black people in the Americas didn’t receive African Christianity. They got white colonial Christianity.
When people say “Christianity existed in Africa before colonization,” they’re usually trying to shut down critique. To make it seem like Christianity is culturally native to Black Americans and Blacks in other parts of the Diaspora with histories of colonization and slavery. But that erases a long, violent history of spiritual domination where white Christians used the Bible to destroy ancestral knowledge, enforce obedience, and justify violence against and extraction of Black bodies.
Many Black Christians, often without realizing it, have internalized a faith tradition that was strategically re-engineered to control them, not to free them. And worse, they’ve been taught to defend that very system as if it were ancestral, intrinsic to our culture, and liberatory even as we keep suffering, keep obeying, and keep waiting for Jesus to come fix what white supremacy broke.”

These lies have led to the blood [🩸] of the Palestinians just as they have led to the blood [🩸] of Jews.

Around 1999, Iranian opposition figures leaked information about a secret nuclear weapons program. Since then, Iran has claimed the program is peaceful, intended for civilian energy. But that claim doesn’t add up. Iran is one of the world’s largest oil producers. Saying they need nuclear energy is like digging a well next to a freshwater lake.
For over two decades, diplomacy has been tried again and again. But every time Iran comes to the negotiating table, it uses diplomacy as a delay tactic while continuing secret nuclear activity. International inspectors would be focused on one site, while Iran secretly opened another.
And now, it’s all come to a head.

Protesters face live bullets, and the internet is shut down to prevent organizing. But despite this, I know firsthand: there are militias inside Iran waiting for the right moment. They want freedom. The words of our Jewish people’s Torah, our ancestors’ sacred writings, are very clear about what is required to show love for Y-HWH with all your heart (lev), all your body-mind (nefesh), and all your fullest actions (me’od).
It is the aspiration towards faithfully fulfilling the treatied mitzvot/halachot for the vassaled Jewish people of/from our Canaan land of Israel that is the act of showing love. ALL of us Jews fail to truly show love to Y-HWH, but we aspire all of our life to wrestle with these obligations 🪬🕎📜.
Those who think that “to love god” means having an emotional experience have got it wrong and are embracing a form of human idolatry, full stop. You can spend your entire life in a temple, monastery, synagogue, whatever – and never once show love through all your religious endeavor!
