For the full moon🌕: Though historically untrue, out of survival necessity, modern Rabbinic Judaism teaches that Jews were always monotheists and taught the world monotheism. The reality is that Jews were Canaanite polytheists, that turned henotheistic (aka, monolatrous) by the Hasmonean period, and only developed a pantheistic monotheism during the time of Maimonides.
With this now said,… How many of you have heard/read the original Jacob (Yaakov) story in our Torah? Probably, none of you who are reading our posts. So, let’s step back into 8th century BCE Judah-Israel and experience this original version of the Jacob patriarch story – within our Jewish ancestors’ polytheistic worldview:

And Jacob left Beer Sheba, and he went to Haran. And Jacob awakened from his sleep, and he said, “Indeed, Y-HWH is in this standing place, and I did not know [it].” And he was frightened, and he said, “How awesome is this standing place! This is none other than the house of god [on the land], and this is the gate of the skies [to the dwelling place of the elohim above, the children gods of El and Asherah].” And Jacob arose early in the morning, and he took the stone that he had placed at his head, and he set it up as a monument, and he poured oil on top of it. [Jacob sanctified this standing place – this land – in an intentional ritual act.] And he named the place Beth El, but Luz was originally the name of the city.
And Jacob uttered a vow, saying, “If god will be alongside me [be with me], and he will guard me on this way, upon which I am going, and he will give me bread to eat and a garment to wear; and if I return in peace to my father’s house, and Y-HWH will be my [land] god; then this stone, which I have placed as a monument, shall be a house of god, and everything that you give me, I will surely tithe to you. “
And Laban said to Jacob, “Because you are my kinsman, should you work for me gratis? Tell me what your wages shall be.” Now Laban had two daughters; the name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel. Leah’s eyes were tender, but Rachel had beautiful features and a beautiful complexion.
And Jacob loved Rachel, and he said, “I will work for you seven years for Rachel, your younger daughter.” And Laban said, “It is better that I give her to you than I should give her to another man. Stay with me.” So Jacob worked for Rachel seven years, but they appeared to him like a few days because of his love for her.
And Jacob said to Laban, “Give me my wife, for my days are completed, that I may come to her.” So Laban gathered all the people of the place, and he made a feast. And it came to pass in the evening that Laban took his daughter Leah, and he brought her to him [Jacob], and he came to her [intimately]. And Laban gave Zilpah his maidservant to his daughter Leah as a maidservant.
And it came to pass in the morning, and behold she was Leah! So he said to Laban, “What is this that you have done to me? Did I not work with you for Rachel? Why have you deceived me?” And Laban said, “It is not done so in our place to give the younger one before the firstborn. Complete the [wedding] week of this one, and we will give you this one too, for the work that you will render me for another seven years.”
And Jacob did so, and he completed the week of this one, and he gave his daughter Rachel to him as a wife. And Laban gave his daughter Rachel his maidservant Bilhah, for a maidservant. And he [Jacob] came also to Rachel [intimately], and he also loved Rachel more than Leah; and he worked with him [Laban] yet another seven years.
It came to pass when Rachel had borne Joseph, that Jacob said to Laban, “Send me away, and I will go to my place and to my land. Give [me] my wives and my children for whom I worked for you, and I will go, for you know my work, which I have worked for you.”
And Laban said to him, “If only I have now found favor in your eyes! I have divined, and Y-HWH has blessed me for your sake.” Then he said, “Specify your wages for me, and I will give [them].”
And he [Jacob] said to him, “You know how I have worked for you and how your livestock was with me. For the little that you had before me has increased in multitude, and Y-HWH blessed you upon my arrival; but now, when will I, too, provide [something] for my household?”
And he [Laban] said, “What shall I give you?” And Jacob said, “You shall give me nothing; if you do this thing for me, I will return, I will pasture your flocks, [and] I will watch [them]. I will pass throughout all your flocks today, removing from there every speckled and spotted kid, and every brown lamb among the sheep, and [every] spotted and speckled [one from] among the goats, and this shall be my wages. And my righteousness will testify for me at a future date for it will come upon my wages before you. Whatever is not speckled or spotted among the goats or brown among the sheep [shall be counted as] stolen with me.”
And Laban said, “Very well! If only it would be as you say!” And he [Laban] removed on that day the ringed and the spotted male goats and all the speckled and spotted female goats, whichever had white on it, and all the brown [from] among the sheep, and he gave [them] into the hands of his sons. And he set three days’ journey between himself and Jacob, and Jacob tended Laban’s remaining animals.
And Jacob took himself moist rod[s] of trembling poplar and hazelnut, and chestnut, and he peeled white streaks upon them, baring the white that was on the rods. And he thrust the rods that he had peeled, into the gutters in the watering troughs where the animals would come to drink opposite the [other] animals, and they would come into heat when they came to drink.
And the flocks came into heat by the rods, and the animals bore ringed, spotted, and striped [young]. And Jacob separated the sheep, and he turned the faces of the animals toward the ringed one[s] and every brown one among Laban’s animals, and he made himself flocks by himself, and he did not place them with Laban’s animals.
And it came to pass, that whenever the animals that were bearing their first would come into heat, Jacob would place the rods in the troughs, before the eyes of the animals, [in order] to bring them into heat by [means of] the rods. But if the animals would delay, he would not place them, so that the ones that delayed were Laban’s, and the ones that bore their first became Jacob’s.
And he heard the words of Laban’s sons, saying, “Jacob has taken all that belonged to our father, and from what belonged to our father, he has amassed this entire fortune.” And Jacob saw Laban’s countenance, that he was not disposed toward him as [he had been] yesterday and the day before. And Y-HWH said to Jacob, “Return to the land of your forefathers and to your birthplace, and I will be with you.”
So Jacob sent and called Rachel and Leah to the field, to his flocks. And he said to them, “I see your father’s countenance, that he is not disposed toward me [as he was] yesterday and the day before, but the god of my father was with me. And you know that with all my might I served your father.
But your father mocked me and changed my wages ten times, but god did not permit him to harm me. If he would say thus, ‘Speckled ones shall be your wages,’ all the animals would bear speckled ones, and if he would say thus, ‘Ringed ones shall be your wages,’ all the animals would bear ringed ones. Thus, god separated your father’s livestock and gave it to me.
And it came to pass at the time the animals came into heat, that I lifted my eyes and saw in a dream, and behold, the he goats that mounted the animals were ringed, speckled, and striped. And a messenger of god said to me in a dream, ‘Jacob!’ And I said, ‘Here I am.’ And he said, ‘Now lift your eyes and see [that] all the he goats mounting the animals are ringed, speckled, and striped, for I have seen all that Laban is doing to you. I [Y-HWH] am the god of Beth El, where you anointed a monument, where you pronounced to me a vow. Now, arise, go forth from this land and return to the land of your birth.’”
And Rachel and Leah replied and said to him, “Do we still have a share or an inheritance in our father’s house? Are we not considered by him as strangers, for he sold us and also consumed our money? But all the wealth that god separated from our father is ours and our children’s. So now, all that god said to you, do.” [Notice how the word elohim can mean “child gods” (of El Elyon) and a singular “god” depending on context.]
So Jacob rose, and he lifted up his sons and his wives upon the camels. And he led all his livestock and all his possessions that he had acquired, the purchase of his acquisition, which he had acquired in Padan Aram, to come to Isaac his father, to the land of Canaan.
Now Laban had gone to shear his sheep, and [meanwhile] Rachel stole her father’s teraphim [carved idols that represent the family gods of the Aramean pantheon – El (the storm god, high god), Astarte (Inanna/Ishtar, fertility goddess), Anat (goddess of warfare and hunting, consort to Ba’al), Haddad (Ba’al, the Lord, the land’s god-King, a storm god), Tammuz (god of agriculture and shepherds), Sin (judge of the dead in the underworld), (etc) – which has DIRECT CORRELATION to the Canaanite elohim (children of El) pantheon – El (the god of light, shape, and order), Asherah (fertility goddess and consort to El Elyon), El Shaddai (god of the twin mountains that look like a woman’s breasts), Y-HWH (the Lord, the land’s god-King, a storm god), Adon (god of agriculture and shepherds), Mot (god of the underworld), (etc)].
And Jacob concealed from Laban the Aramean by not telling him that he was fleeing. So he and all that were his fled, and he arose and crossed the river, and he directed his face toward Mount Gilead.
On the third day, Laban was informed that Jacob had fled. And Jacob said to his kinsmen, “Gather stones,” and they took stones and made a pile, and they ate there by the pile. And Laban called it Yegar Sahadutha, but Jacob called it Gal’ed [a heap/pile of testimony, a place of witness over what transpired].

An Indigenous Pride parade like no other – Jerusalem, Israel!

Whenever we are in israel during this time of the year, we make every effort to participate, לתת חיזוק ולקבלה; to empower and to be be empowered.
Thus, with more than 6,000 miles separating our friends נשמח מרחוק בלב קרוב. Physically, we indeed are in the West but our hearts and neshamot are right now are far far away, in the East, at the Jerusalem pride parade, which is happening now.
Allow me please to explain myself:
My wife and I have now spent fifteen summers in Israel, and whenever possible, I make it my business to join the marchers. It is an annual source of spiritual joy and inspiration. It is a zechut to march and express solidarity with these holy souls whose primary desire, once it is stripped of the massive obscuring layers, is kirvat Elokim; closeness to HKBH–just like you and me.
And that is very palpable at this parade.
The Jerusalem march is its own breed. There is none of the provocative elements we have come to associate with these parades: revealing clothing, risqué behavior, boundary pushing, and blunt in-your-faceness. The Jerusalem version is very different. The vibe there is more like a very “lebedig” yeshivish wedding. People walk quietly, with the utmost deference for the sanctity of the city, shmooze, and occasionally break out in song, singing the kind of songs you’d hear at a shtark wedding (אנחנו מאמינים בני מאמינים, עוז והדר לבושה, and the like.)
Over the years I have come to understand the uniqueness of this particular parade, and its distinct purpose. The gay community marches in Jerusalem in order to bask in the sanctity of the city, not to subvert it.
Allow me to elaborate.
We all crave moments of transcendence. It is what allows us to overcome life’s vicissitudes, subdue our pains and alleviate some of our frustrations. Special moments like that enable us to take time out from our daily grind
The best place to experience those elevating moments is Jerusalem, the cradle of Jewish transcendence. The city is Judaism’s center of holiness. Therefore, when we are there, we replenish and rejuvenate spiritually, making life’s hardships tolerable and somewhat less draining.
In “othering” the LGBTQ community, we have at times managed to obscure the obvious: that our LGBTQ brothers and sisters are us, sharing our spiritual and emotional needs.
Like us, they too crave moments of transcendence and spiritual ecstasy. It is what allows them to overcome their own physical aches, spiritual pain, and life’s usual frustrations.
In fact, the harder the life, the more important those moments of transcendental experience are. One could, therefore, reasonably argue that the LGBTQ community deserves Jerusalemite transcendence even more.
That is the sole reason why the LGBTQ community marches in Jerusalem–for a yearly spiritual tune-up.
And to be able to express solidarity with those marchers, by offering allyship and pastoral support, is a huge zechut. For that reason I make sure to join hands with the community every year, either in person or, if I am unable, at least in spirit.
In addition to the religious impetus to participate, there is another reason why I join the parade: to express my personal hakarat ha’tov to the community. My own Torah learning has been immensely enriched by the observant LGBTQ community. Because of them I was inspired to explore areas of halakha that I have never studied before, resulting in a lot of new Torah, including my teshuvot on kitniyot, pidyon ha’ben and conversion as it pertains to the community, along with a lengthy teshuva on SSM–which I might or might not publish one day. Therefore, שלי שלהם!
Ironically, I always have difficulty joining the parade in person. Given my looks, the security apparatus pigeonholes me as chareidi, suspecting that I am there to cause havoc, not to actually participate. I am made to wait in some kind of holding pen until a member of the community who knows me comes to vouch for me.
That it happens at a parade whose raison d’etre is not to judge people, is kind of ironic. I don’t begrudge them for doing it, but it’s nonetheless a bit dissonant, hard to reconcile with the ethos of the march.”

We understand that Boulder Colorado police department has to do their due diligence before saying anything publicly, because they have to go to court when this terrorist is prosecuted. But, CNN and their “guests” were quick to delegitimize the FBI’s statement within an hour that this is “targeted terrorist attack”.
