From the ORIGIN point of Christianity amongst NON-Jew Levantine, Aegean, and Egyptian peoples during the 2nd to 4th centuries A.D., these early non-proselytizing (and NON-colonizing) Christians believed that Jesus, the human Jew of Nazareth, was a new “god in flesh” and they worshipped him as so. The occupying Roman emperors were also a “god in flesh”.

👉 On Right and Wrong, Sodom and Gomorrah, and the Anti-Israel Crowd. Some thoughts this morning….
I read through a bunch of comments on previous posts from the anti-Israel crowd, and one thing STANDS out again and again – the absolute conviction that Israel [aka, Jews/Israelis] is an evil force in the world.
While I strongly disagree, it is fascinating to observe the way some people insist on depicting Israel as a genocidal, insane, out-of-control entity that contributes nothing but destruction and therefore should not exist.
That mindset reminded me of the biblical story of Sodom and Gomorrah. The Bible describes Sodom and Gomorrah as the embodiment of corruption, cruelty, and moral collapse.
[ALL males of Sedom v’Amora, from children to elderly – (regardless of “SEXUAL orientation”) – came out to RAPE the human מלאכים (mal’achim, the “messengers/ambassadors” of our Canaan land-god Y-HWH) that a Jew had given housing to – simply for the night. The very same Jew that sinfully offered his daughters to be raped, instead of the ambassadors of ha’Shem – fearing the power of THIS particular Canaan land-god!]
Ironically, the Hebrew word that our Torah scroll of the Jewish people’s ancestral writings uses for their human “inhospitality” behavior is “חמס” (ḥamas) – which in our Canaanite Hebrew language means “violence, injustice, wickedness, deceit”. I’ll leave that thought with you.

“What if there are 50 righteous people in Sodom and Gomorrah?
What about 45? 40? 30? 20?
What about 10 righteous people?”

The bald-faced lie that Israel committed genocide in Gaza is quickly becoming the 21st-century equivalent of the centuries-old blood libel against the Jewish people.
It has crept into mainstream global discourse, and unless massive efforts are made to debunk the false claims once and for all, when the history of the two-year Israel-Hamas War is taught in the decades to come, the focus will not be on the October 7 massacre and the cruel and inhumane treatment of hundreds of Israeli hostages. It will highlight the “genocide” that Israel committed against the Gazans.
The latest example – and one of the most vilifying – of genocide being bandied about matter-of-factly occurred late last week, when Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-New York) alleged at the Munich Security Conference that US aid to Israel had enabled genocide.
When asked by Haaretz reporter Hagar Shezaf if she thought “the Democratic presidential candidate in the 2028 elections should reevaluate military aid to Israel,” AOC, a touted Democratic candidate for the 2028 presidential election, responded with the mantra she’s spouted since the October 7 massacre: that Israel was indiscriminately killing Palestinians in Gaza.
“I think that personally, that the idea of completely unconditional aid, no matter what one does, does not make sense,” she said. “I think it enabled a genocide in Gaza, and I think that we have thousands of women and children dead that don’t, that was completely avoidable.”
Besides the dark irony of AOC’s attack on the Jewish state being stated in the birthplace of Adolf Hitler’s Nazi movement that carried out the Holocaust – the worst genocide in human history – her statement reveals how deeply the “genocide” lie has permeated into the mainstream diplomatic discourse.
Thankfully, the issue is coming to the forefront, thanks to an online campaign initiated by a group of respected Jewish thinkers, teachers, and writers not generally associated with the Right’s allegiance to the notion that Israel can do no wrong. Among the Israeli signatories are Rabbi Irving “Yitz” Greenberg, journalist and teacher Yossi Klein Halevi, and Rabbi Micha Odenheimer of Tevel b’Tzedek, an Israeli nonprofit.
They plainly but eloquently stated the obvious, which has been either ignored or disputed.
They wrote: “The unprecedented combat conditions of the war – hundreds of kilometers of tunnels, thousands of booby-trapped homes – the conflating of combatants with ‘journalists’ and ‘human rights workers,’ the ratio of civilian-to-terrorist casualties, considered low for asymmetrical urban warfare, the absence of mass starvation despite repeated claims of imminent catastrophe, the warnings given to civilians before attack: All these factors were erased in the eagerness to indict Israel for genocide.
“A crucial difference between war as tragedy and war as genocide is intent. In this war, only one side intended to commit genocide, and that is Hamas.
“To accuse Israel of genocide, the massacre of October 7 has been systematically downplayed, while Israeli actions have been distorted and amplified. Israel went to war on October 8, not out of vengeance, as its detractors claim, but to break the Iranian-led siege of terror enclaves on its borders, and to restore its deterrence, without which it cannot survive in the long term in the Middle East. Thousands of rockets and missiles were fired at Israel in the weeks following the massacre, while Hamas starved and tortured 250 Israelis, some of whom were murdered in captivity.
On October 8, as Israel was still fighting terrorists within its border communities and hadn’t yet begun burying its dead, anti-Zionists began raising the cry of “genocide,” they wrote.
The accusation of genocide, as uttered by AOC and hundreds of other public influential figures, has become a pretext for excluding, attacking, and even murdering Jews around the world. They clearly stated, adding that its purpose is to delegitimize Jewish self-determination and to turn the only Jewish state into the world’s arch criminal and pariah.
Urging both Jews and non-Jews to treat the accusation of genocide with revulsion – as the latest in a long history of lies about the Jewish people – the petitioners state at the end of their letter: “‘A lie has no legs,’ notes the ancient Hebrew proverb. We will not allow this lie to stand.”
It’s time for all of us to join these calls for reason and make our voices heard to denounce the claims of genocide whenever they are raised and by whoever raises them.

On this day in 1807, Napoleon Bonaparte convened what he called the Grand Sanhedrin in Paris. Loosely modeled after the ancient Jewish high court of Jerusalem, this assembly of seventy-one rabbis and lay leaders was meant to answer a series of questions about Jewish law, loyalty, and citizenship. Napoleon had already summoned an Assembly of Notables the previous year, but he now wanted something with religious authority that would publicly show that Jews could live as faithful citizens of France. Beneath the symbolism, however, his goal was clear: he wanted the Jews to integrate into French society, adopt its civic identity, and ultimately assimilate into the broader national culture.
The Sanhedrin’s rulings reflected this aim. It declared that Jews must consider the land of their birth their fatherland, obey its laws, and treat fellow citizens as brothers. It affirmed that polygamy was forbidden, that marriages required civil approval, and that Jews could enter any profession. Napoleon saw this not as a concession to Judaism, but as a step toward reshaping Jewish life into something compatible with the modern state. His policies toward the Jews were always a mix of Enlightenment ideals and political calculation. Years earlier, during his Middle Eastern campaign in 1799, he reportedly called on the Jews to restore their ancient homeland in Jerusalem, an appeal that may have been strategic propaganda, but one that later Zionist thinkers would see as a symbolic precursor to modern Jewish nationalism.
The Grand Sanhedrin itself lasted only a few months, yet it marked a turning point in modern Jewish history. Suddenly, a bottle struck me, and I was assaulted by three young men. “Hymie!” they shouted. Baruch Hashem, I emerged relatively unscathed – but I knew the cause. Jesse Jackson’s careless words, his offhand reference to Jews as “Hymies” and to New York as “Hymietown,” had filtered into the streets.
Words spoken by a national figure had given license to thugs. The connection between rhetoric and violence was not theoretical for me that day – it was visceral and personal. And yet, as we mark the passing of Reverend Jesse Louis Jackson Sr. this morning, February 17, 2026, at the age of 84, the story does not end with that bottle on Metropolitan Avenue.
It is, remarkably, a story of growth – of a man who caused real harm, who learned from his mistakes, and who spent decades trying to make things right. That journey of maturation deserves to be told.
Jackson emerged as a protégé of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the golden era of Black-Jewish cooperation. Jewish activists had marched at Selma, helped fund the NAACP, and two Jewish civil rights workers – Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner – were murdered alongside James Chaney in Mississippi in 1964. Jackson was present with King at the Lorraine Motel the day before King’s assassination in 1968. He carried forward King’s legacy, founding Operation PUSH in 1971, but the broader Black-Jewish alliance was already beginning to fray over issues of affirmative action, urban politics, and the Middle East.
The defining rupture came during Jackson’s 1984 presidential campaign. In what he believed was an off-the-record conversation with Washington Post reporter Milton Coleman, Jackson referred to Jews as “Hymies” and to New York City as “Hymietown.” His initial response compounded the damage: he denied making the comments, then tried to minimize them, and only after weeks of mounting pressure offered a public apology at a synagogue in Manchester, New Hampshire. Those harmful words had consequences far beyond the political arena. They seeped into the culture and emboldened those looking for an excuse to target Jews.
The wound was deepened enormously by Jackson’s association with Louis Farrakhan, the Nation of Islam leader who had been providing security for Jackson’s campaign. Farrakhan responded to the controversy with threats against Coleman and incendiary rhetoric against Jews. Jackson was painfully slow to distance himself from Farrakhan, and his eventual disavowal struck many as reluctant and insufficient.
Jackson had also caused deep alarm through his 1979 embrace of Yasser Arafat, head of the PLO that is committed to Israel’s destruction, and through remarks such as his 1980 statement that “Zionism is a kind of poisonous weed that is choking Judaism.” For many American Jews, this constellation of words and associations marked Jackson as hostile not merely to Israeli policy but to Jewish peoplehood itself.
What happened next, however, is the part of the story that deserves EMPHASIS – because it reveals something important about the human capacity for change.
Jackson did not simply move on and forget. He began a sustained, decades-long effort to repair the damage he had caused and to demonstrate through concrete actions that his commitment to the Jewish community was real. The record of his deeds tells a remarkable story of maturation.
Even before the “Hymietown” debacle, Jackson had stood with the Jewish community in Skokie, Illinois, in 1978, when neo-Nazis threatened to march through a neighborhood home to thousands of Holocaust survivors. He marched arm-in-arm with Jews against hatred at a time when it mattered.
In 1985, when President Reagan controversially laid a memorial wreath at a cemetery in Bitburg, Germany, that contained graves of SS soldiers, Jackson led a counter-protest at the Dachau concentration camp – a powerful statement of solidarity with the memory of the six million.
Jackson personally intervened with world leaders on behalf of persecuted Jews. He pressed Syrian President Hafez Assad to release Syrian Jews who were being held in oppressive conditions. He confronted Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev about the plight of Soviet Jewry, advocating for their right to emigrate freely. He visited synagogues across the country [United States], engaged in private dialogue with Jewish leaders, and worked to build personal relationships of trust.
Perhaps the most dramatic symbol of Jackson’s transformation came in July 1992, when he addressed the World Jewish Congress at its conference on antisemitism in Brussels. The invitation itself was controversial – Edgar Bronfman, president of the World Jewish Congress, faced opposition from members who considered Jackson’s record disqualifying. But Bronfman believed in the possibility of reconciliation, and Reform leader Alexander Schindler urged the Jewish community to accept that, in his words, “people can learn, and change, and grow.”
Jackson rose to the occasion. He delivered a powerful address in which he condemned antisemitism in unequivocal terms, praised Zionism as “a liberation movement,” attacked the stereotyping of Jews, and called for Blacks and Jews to renew their joint fight against racism. He invoked the shared legacy of King and Professor Abraham Joshua Heschel, of Schwerner, Chaney, and Goodman. He called for common action and urged both communities to share synagogue and church experiences so that they might develop a greater appreciation of each other.
Isi Leibler, an Australian Jewish leader and co-chairman of the WJC’s governing board, had initially opposed Jackson’s appearance. Afterward, he admitted candidly that he had been wrong, and that he saw genuine opportunities for rapprochement going forward.
The transformation in Jackson’s language – from “Zionism is a poisonous weed” to “Zionism is a liberation movement” – was not mere political calculation. It reflected years of listening, learning, and genuine introspection.
In 1999, when thirteen Iranian Jews – including rabbis, religious teachers, and community activists – were arrested and charged as Zionist spies, a charge punishable by death in Iran, Jackson stepped forward without hesitation. He appeared at the Park East Synagogue on Manhattan’s Upper East Side and committed himself to working for their release.
This was no longer the same man who had carelessly tossed around slurs in 1984. This was a leader who had internalized the weight of his earlier mistakes and was determined to make amends through action.
In the years that followed, Jackson continued to speak at Holocaust commemorations and “interfaith” gatherings. He addressed the European Holocaust Memorial Day for Sinti and Roma at a former concentration camp, delivering a moving speech in which he declared that the genocide against Jews stands as one of the greatest crimes against humanity and called for vigilance against the resurgence of antisemitism and far-right nationalism. I have been called the “N-word” more times over the course of my life than I care to remember, but I started being called “Zio” in only the past few months. Both words have a similarly chilling effect. More than two years after Hamas’s October 7 attack and Israel’s military response in Gaza and elsewhere, “Zio” has become a standard slur for those, like me, who publicly affirm Israel’s right to exist as both a sovereign state and Jewish nation. (Note, this dual racism experience is equally shared by born Jews of Mizrahi and Ethiopian refugees to the United States, and melanin rich Sephardi and Caribbean Jews, too.)
As a kid, I intuitively understood that being called “n-gger” was to be on the receiving end of the ultimate act of disempowerment and debasement. And this is nearly identical to how I feel every time I am branded a “Zio.” So long as they are hidden behind their various social media profiles, my accusers, of course, cannot literally do me harm for being a “Zio.” But I have little doubt that this is their goal. Much as “N-gger” conveys white sheets and crosses ablaze, “Zio” conjures up swastikas and keffiyehs. All are images of fear, violence, and loathing. Yet the “N-word” has been cast into linguistic exile, and “Zio” is nearing a kind of cultural legitimacy.
To be clear, for the moment at least, “Zio” is still too niche and too culturally specific to evoke the institutional hatred and historic terror that finally rendered the “n-word” literally unutterable. Beyond the debates around Gaza and “Palestine,” most folks have yet to encounter the term, let alone understand its complex origins, nuances, and power dynamics. But even if its reach is more modest than that of the “N-word,” the intent behind its use is certainly the same. After all, no one has done more to popularize “Zio” than David Duke, the former Louisiana politician and grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan.
He has used the term hundreds of times across various media platforms — and is as fluent in racism as he is in Jew-hatred. “Guns did not create the horror in that little school in Sandy Hook, Connecticut.…The Zio masters of the media did,” declared Duke following the infamous 2012 school shooting that claimed 26 lives. “The Zio control of Hollywood…poisons the hearts and minds of hundreds of millions of people in the West,” he announced just a year later. And among the titles of Duke’s videos on his since-banned YouTube channel are “How we can defeat zio globalism” and “CNN Goldman Sachs and the Zio Matrix.”
Despite the term’s frequent use by overt bigots, however, some maintain that “Zio” is not and could never be comparable to the “N-word.” The latter, so this thinking goes, targets an entire race, while “Zio” merely calls out adherents of an ideology. On the surface, this explanation has a false plausibility to it. The “N-word,” of course, directly references African Americans, and its etymological roots go back to myriad forms of the word “black.” There’s no mistaking its deep and clear historical significance. “Zio,” obviously, refers to those who embrace Zionism and believe in Israel as the rightful and historic Jewish homeland. When someone calls me a “Zio,” therefore, he can claim that he’s attacking a choice I’ve made — rather than a permanent condition, such as being black. A Zionist, after all, doesn’t even have to be a Jew.
But one need not retell the long history of the demonization of Zionism to discredit this defense. Zionism is understood by most as a central component of Jewish identity. And we can see, in the present day, violent attacks on Jews and synagogues worldwide in the name of anti-Zionism. It matters not at all to the perpetrators if those Jews or synagogues are in any way connected to or supporters of Zionism. Suffice it to say, the very attempt to cast Jewish nationalism — alone among nationalisms — as an evil ideology is naked anti-Semitism. There’s little doubt about who is being targeted by the word “Zio” and why they’re so squarely in its crosshairs.
Then there’s the diminutive formulation of the word. This too reveals the intent behind its use. “Zio” almost seems cutesy, doesn’t it? But there’s nothing innocent about it. The shortening of objective terms that describe groups of people is precisely how many slurs have been formed throughout history. Before “Zio,” there was, to cite a few examples, “Paki,” “Spic,” “homo,” and, yes, “heeb.” It is the shortening, the distilling, of the word that gives it its sting. Unlike blacks, of course, Zionists don’t necessarily wear their targeted identity on the outside. But as someone who’s both African-American and a Zionist Jew, I can confirm that both identities are equally indelible. No matter how I might dress or comport myself, I can no more easily disavow Zionism and Israel than I can my own blackness.
This is why, for me at least, the increasing overlap between “N-gger” and “Zio” makes perfect ideological sense. Decades ago, kids — yes, even Jewish kids — called me “n-gger” to instill fear and render me impotent as a consequence of my darker skin. I was often the only African American in my classroom or camp cabin or synagogue group; branding me “n-gger” was a way of affirming that I would remain very separate and very unequal in these mostly white environments. And those who said it knew that I knew there was nothing I could do about it.
“N-gger” was a threat and provocation, deployed by people who understood — even as children — that using it would not merely hurt me, but leave me fearful, silent, imperiled. The terror wasn’t simply in the word itself, but in the racialized rage and the legacy of impunity enjoyed by so many generations who had used the word before. It is the hope of antiSemites that a similar legacy is now being forged for “Zio,” which is tossed around cavalierly and receives — especially online — a remarkable degree of social and cultural acceptability. And if anything, that acceptability is growing. “Zio” appears freely and often goes unchallenged in social justice debates on multiple platforms and at assorted activist gatherings.
Today, even the most ardently bigoted right-winger, such as self-described white nationalist Nick Fuentes, would think hard about publicly uttering the “n-word.” He would be loath to invite the inevitable political backlash, even though his belief system aligns perfectly with the use of the term. Yet there is little such gatekeeping for “Zio” right now, despite its use as a similar tool for terror and its indisputable targeting of Jews. Indeed, there is scarcely a taboo against the word on the right, left, or anywhere in between.
This is where “Zio” and the “N-word” most odiously converge—both are agents of unbridled hate speech doing double duty as a call to arms. Except one is anathema, and the other flows freely without consequence. Which is why I was so certain, upon receiving my first accusations of being a “Zio,” it was unlikely to be my last. In both the centrist precincts I currently inhabit and the progressive communities that shaped my past, “N-gger” is a word that is simply never spoken. But in both worlds, “Zio” is screamed louder than ever.

ALL Indigenous peoples understand the sacredness of gift-giving between tribes. And Jews giving a Torah scroll to non-Jews is NOT a thang. Our sacred ancestral writings in our Canaanite Hebrew language is our MOST precious possession as Jews – anywhere and everywhere upon our shared planet Earth!
So, we ask here…. How deep are the ties between kānaka ‘ōiwi (Hawaiians) and kānaka Iudaio (Jews)? Portuguese deep or even deeper? The answer is made clear with a Jewish Rabbi’s gifting of our Torah scroll to King David Kalākaua, at his request, in the 1800’s.
David Laʻamea Kamanakapuʻu Māhinulani Nālaʻiaʻehuokalani Lumialani Kalākaua, also known as “the Merrie Monarch”, had a deeply intimate relationship with a Jewish immigrant from Russia whose name was אליאס אברהם רוזנברג Elias Abraham Rosenberg, in Hawaiian “Eliaka Apelahama Loselabeka”.
Before Eliaka Loselabeka left the island of Hawai’i in 1886, he had educated King Kalākaua in basic Hebrew, encouraged the Merrie Monarch to reinstitute the indigenous Hawaiian ethno-religion, was given the royal position of kahuna-kilokilo (royal soothsayer), and gifted his Torah scroll and yad to the King of Hawai’i.
Why did this happen in Hawai’i? Simply because the way that Elias Rosenberg chanted in Hebrew reminded King Kalākaua of ancient Hawaiian rites. Remember, the white people – the “haole” – had already brought their Christian Bible and Colonial lifeways to the islands of Hawai’i, hence the Hawaiian Kingdom “Constitution”.
Historical note: It was after Elias Rosenberg had left the island due to failing health that in June 1887, American, European, and native Hawaiian anti-monarchists enforced the 1887 Constitution of the Hawaiian Kingdom, that stripped absolute Hawaiian monarchy from kānaka ‘ōiwi. This constitution became known as the “Bayonet Constitution”, because this armed militia forced King Kalākaua to sign it, or be deposed from his royal throne.
The Torah scroll and yad that Elias Rosenberg gifted to King Kalākaua is still to this day on the island of O’ahu, having been gifted back by kānaka ‘ōiwi (Hawaiians) to kama’āina kānaka Iudaio (settled/assimilated Jews), who keep the history of Jewish-Hawaiian history.
The very first Jew known to be living in Hawai’i was during the late 1700’s, wherein he became known through a sailor on the whaling ship Neptune that recorded into its ship log in 1798 that the Hawaiian king had come aboard their ship with a “Jew cook.” And, even BEFORE Elias Rosenberg was given a position on the Royal court of Hawai’i, there was Paul Neumann who also held a position as “court Jew” – Attorney General of the Hawaiian Kingdom under King Kalākaua from 1883 to 1886.

“Purity of the American race.” “America First! 🇺🇸” In the 1900’s, a Jew and a Black man in the United States struggled for their survival. The accusers were, of course, “white people” of the United States of colonial America 🇺🇸. The skin color of the “other” did NOT matter to these white supremacists of America!
