Pat McCabe shared, “Two days ago I was honored to be present for an event I have no ready-made place in my body, psyche, or soul for. In the north woodlands of Wisconsin, 4 hours north of Milwaukee, a small ceremony took place in which a community of catholic sisters (not “nuns” apparently) signed the deed of a retreat center they held over to the Lac du Flambeau, Chippewa Nation. In the hours before the start of the event, people arrived to the lake side retreat from all different places, relative to the event. I stood lakeside with a few nuns and local neighbors on the dock. One nun wistfully described her many memories of watching sunrise on this lake, her hand gesturing over the water to emphasize the beauty of how the light moved as the sun traveled. As we moved to go to the lodge/office to warm up, we passed a small, peddle boat in the water. “I probably peddled that boat 200 times!” she laughed holding her hand out to it to acknowledge their history. The median age of nuns in the U.S. is 84.
Tribal members began to arrive, women in elaborate ribbon skirts, some men in braids, others in suits and shiny shoes. A large drum was carried in to the center where chairs and a microphone were set up next to a small white caterers tent. A dear ceremony sister climbed out of her truck with grandsons in tow. They carried her altar and set it up under her direction to the side of the microphone stand. I was honored that she asked me to sit with her for the prayers her people had called on her to make on behalf of this unprecedented event.
To our knowledge, this had not happened before. A community of catholic sisters voluntarily returning land to the original stewards of a place, a region, where they had superimposed themselves, in the name of god, in the name of empire, under the protection and sanctions of the convoluted logics and presumptions of the Doctrine of Discovery.
It was quiet that morning. Over and over people were saying that they didn’t quite know what to do because there was never a time they had been called on before to participate in such an event. Nuns and bishops were happily bewildered. Tribal spiritual leaders and council members fell on to the habits of traditional hosting and ceremonial protocols.
After my sister, Tinker, smoked the pipe and sent the water out to bless all who bore witness, the singers fired up that big drum. I felt the land receiving their song in a new way, like water poured on parched earth. And with the added sweetness of the deference and prayers of the nuns, and bishops and clergy. All opening to be a vessel of the same mercy, of the same Grace. A peace that passeth any of our understanding, in that moment. My body, my nervous system, my DNA, my epigenetics had no known place to file such a thing. A victory with out a war. No maneuvers, no clashes, no coercion, no fight. A victory arising from listening, and from really hearing, from soul searching and a sincere desire for a participation in righteousness. A mutual victory made from vulnerability, humility, and actual dignity.
I watched the moment when a sister passed the keys to the CEO of the tribe while he and the rest of us were elbow deep in a venison backstrap feast provided by the tribe, and when the president (?) of the order of Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration looked around the office, coffee maker with cream and sugar on the side still hot, pens and pencils still in a cup on the desk, and said, “Well it all belongs to Lac du Flambeau now.” And walked out of the building.
My congratulations and celebrations go out to the Lac du Flambeau people and their restored access to not only this beautiful place but also the lake that they hold so near in their hearts, to my sister who’s great-grandma lived on the island in the middle of the lake we could see from the ceremony, to the children who will say they were there, but also to the sisters who were willing to receive information new to them about their own history, who were willing to be educated – you are amazing Land Justice Futures! – and who took an action of radical bridging and righteousness.

I see it as Mother Earth strategy, interrupting old ideas, law, ideas of ownership and real estate, habits of money and finance, value and profit. I am not privy to all of the details or the story but the facts that come out of it seem to be that they named the price at what they purchased the place for in 1950 or so, plus one penny. I guess I do have reluctance to say that part of the story because I feel sad that people will try to turn it into something less than the momentous occasion that it is, at least in my view. Because the light of ha’Shem the Creator is without end, if not properly filtered it would be IMPOSSIBLE for us – ALL LIFE, as we humans know it – to exist within it (hence separation of light from darkness), as physical reality cannot exist within a context of the Creator’s “let there be light”. One way of understanding this is to imagine yourself staring straight into the heart of the sun (the ultimate cosmological example of fire 🔥). Without the proper equipment to filter and reduce this awesome light, you could lose your vision forever.
How do humans – the human species – filter the incomprehensible reality that surrounds us and is inherently us? Through our Indigenous lifeways, to help us see what we are ready and able to see and to protect us from what we are not yet ready to see. Just like our non-human relatives, only WAY MORE heady/brainy! Our genetic closest non-human relatives – the chimpanzees – do NOT have a need or reason to believe in bananas in “heaven” (the human imagined skies above). They see the bananas that exist all around them!
Do chimpanzees dance with joy after a Shoah (Holocaust/Nakba) upon their species? ABSOLUTELY “YES”! They share the same divine breath of life (the “soul”) of the Creator! The ultimate survival technique of the nefesh (“living breathing creatures”) of our shared planet Earth 🌍🌎🌏 is the inherent ability to return to a life of joy after such great tragedies that befall our relative species. We will DANCE AGAIN as a matter of Indigenous resistance and survival!!!
It is also the teaching of the Na Nach Jews that every human being must “search for the tzaddik (“the honest, real, and pure person”) within themself and for themself – that every Jew (and, by extension, every “human being”) has the potential to become a tzaddik (a person who sanctifies life with every daily attempted action). This is NOT “monastery” type behavior, but daily living in the moment and finding a way to dance joyfully through – even when the circumstances of pain are PREVENTING us – momentarily.
Here is another teaching worth listening to by the Na Nach Jews and their increasing Sephardi Jewish influenced:
“Na Nach Nachma Nachman me’Uman”! This phase has DEEP Jewish Indigenous roots! So much so that among some groups of Sephardic Jewish youth in Israel, it has become a sort of rallying cry for returning to traditional Indigenous Judaism (Judah-people-ism, regardless of Western imposed designations of “dati” or “masorti” or “chiloni”).
The Jewish people’s Talmud teaches in Tractate Pesachim that if one wants to rid himself of a certain demon (meaning, a mind-body struggle with life as we experience it) that inflicts water he/she should say שברירי ברירי רירי ירי רי – THEREBY diminishing the effects of the demon of struggle. Just as we see that saying phrases with diminishing letters can diminish the effects of something impure (meaning, life struggling), so to saying and adding to the name of a respected elder (a sage, a exemplary person) can exemplify him/her to the greatest hight of living the human experience!
The phrase “Na Nach Nachma” has this such structure in mind, and it DOES NOT matter which Jewish Rebbe’s name this life mantra is based upon. For, “Nachman” himself clearly taught his followers to NOT be “fanatics”. Instead, they should choose one personal mitzvah (a sacred Indigenous Jewish obligation) to be very strict about and to do the others with a healthy amount of care (Rabbi Nachman’s Wisdom #235)! … LISTEN CLOSELY, this is ALL Indigenous peoples’ lifeways upon our shared planet Earth 🌍🌎🌏.
Pesachim 112a:5 – “The Sages taught: A person should not drink water from rivers or from ponds at night. And if he drank, his blood is upon his own head due to the danger. The Gemara explains: What is this danger? The danger of blindness. The Gemara asks: And if he is thirsty, what is his remedy? If there is another person with him, he should say to him: So-and-so, son of so-and-so, I thirst for water. And if there is no one else with him, he should say to himself: So-and-so, my mother said to me to beware of shavrirei, the demon of blindness. He should continue to say the following incantation, in the first part of which the demon’s name gradually disappears: Shavrirei berirei rirei yiri ri; I thirst for water in white earthenware cups. This is an incantation against those demons.”
