That, in a way, was Rav Meir’s genius. When he created Daf Yomi, he wasn’t just coordinating a schedule, he was reinventing the Jewish conversation. He imagined a world where two Jews, meeting anywhere—Krakow or Casablanca, Warsaw or Williamsburg—could connect instantly, sharing a page, a question, an insight. He gave Jewish small talk substance. “What’s on today’s daf?” became our new “How’s the weather?”—except this time, it mattered.
Rav Meir came from the Polish school of thought, a culture that treated Judaism as an intellectual enterprise—a religion of ideas as much as deeds. Hungarian Jewry cultivated a different ideal: meticulous practice and religious precision. Both produced greatness, but in Poland the rebbe was often also a lamdan, a scholar of formidable range. Rav Meir’s genius was born of that atmosphere—of conceptual daring and intellectual creativity.
Tragically, Rav Shapiro Z”L died without children to carry his name.
But he did leave behind something far more enduring: a global community of learners—many thousands of spiritual heirs connected through the daily study he inspired. On this day, it feels right to make that connection personal.
