Chuck Hoskins, the Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, said in a statement today—July 6—“Coulter’s statement, on its face, is a despicable rhetorical shot trained on the First Peoples of this continent, designed to dehumanize and diminish us and our ancestors and puts us at risk of further injury. King Balak hires a man named Balaam, a Moabite priest (seer, prophet), to go to our Israeli land to curse the Israelites. Along the way, Balaam’s donkey suddenly stops and refuses inexplicably to move forward. Balaam eventually gets upset and strikes his donkey to force him to continue walking.
This is where the donkey suddenly speaks to Balaam, asking Balaam “why” he is being beaten, for he stopped because of the divine adversary standing in their way. Thus, Balaam’s eyes were opened to this adversary sent by Y-HWH, who was standing in the path to kill him.
This story of Balaam is a lesson for non-Jews, that the land g-d of Israel will protect his people! Balaam ends up blessing the Israelites instead. The Jewish people of Israel 🪬🕎 have a lot of stories about gods and demigods, animals that speak, and sages that transform into animals when their work is not complete before they die.
