How did we get to the 4th century CE Greek Christian claim that “Jews worship the devil… their religion a disease” up in the Aegean north, the birthplace of “Jesus Christ”, the un-Jew-ed god-in-flesh messiah of the world?
Before we begin to answer this question with easily verifiable historical facts, we must first acknowledge that “the Jews” were a polytheistic Canaan people in BCE “antiquity”. Our Jewish people’s national gods, in this period of Judean history were El and Asherah and Y-HWH.
El and Asherah were the parents of the god-Kings (the Elohim, the children gods), the divine rulers of the lands and their peoples that were assigned to them by El Elyon. Now, by the 2nd Temple period, the Jewish people evolved, slowly but surely, into being henotheists.
Meaning, Y-HWH became El and Asherah, and Judean monolatry was established – no worshipping other gods other than Y-HWH as our native Judean people’s national land-god (or god-King).
It wouldn’t be until Maimonides period of collective human history (the CE European “Middle Ages”), that the Jewish people’s perception of Y-HWH and all other gods would become the singular non-physical pantheistic-monotheistic version of Y-HWH, that conforms fully with our ancient Jewish cosmologist’s understanding of “creation” (the Six Days of Creation origin myth).
With this history of our Jewish people now said….
Again, how did we get to the 4th century CE Greek Christian claim, up in the Aegean north, that “Jews worship the devil… their religion a disease” (as stated by influential early Church Father, John Chrysostom)? It actually started in Egypt with the Kushite and Persian brief occupations of Egypt in the Third Intermediate and Late Periods of Egyptian history.
The Egyptian god Seth, who had originally been the god of foreigners, became associated with foreign oppressors amongst native Egyptians – despite their own Egyptian history of being regional conquesting oppressors of Southwest Asian peoples – including the Canaanites, of which the Jews are people amongst! Hence, our Exodus origin story.
When Egypt was reunited militarily as one Egyptian kingdom in the BCE period, the god Ba’al on temple walls was renamed to Seth, without changing anything about our Canaanite pantheon god. By the time of Persian conquest of Egypt, Seth became particularly vilified as a demon god, and his defeat by Horus was widely celebrated.
What does Seth, Ba’al, and Y-HWH have in common? They are the desert gods of mischief and misfortune, tied to the physical nature of storms! Hence, it was not a great leap in the Coptic world of the CE period of human history to tie Y-HWH forever to Ba’al-Seth. The seeds were already planted BEFORE the northern Aegean Christians arrived to conquer and rule over Egypt.
Hence, began the Gnosticism that would forever inform Aegean Christian spread beliefs about Jews! We’ve talked a lot on this page about the history of Christianity itself – both antisemitic Catholic and Protestant. Okay, Colonizers, you need to stop that false equivalency. The Jewish people are NOT a religion, like northern Aegean-created Colonial Christianity and southern Hejaz-created Colonial Islam. A Torah-Based Response to the Erasure of Color in Judaism
Let’s address a myth so persistent it should have its own mezuzah: Jews are white. Not some Jews. Not Jews from Europe. No—all Jews, apparently, are descendants of a mythical Ashkenazi monolith who emerged fully formed from a Polish shtetl in the 1800s, wearing round glasses and arguing with their mothers.
Except… that’s not how any of this works.
Even worse is when this myth is turned into a cudgel—used by antisemites to discredit Jews as “imposters,” and by some Black nationalists to claim that only Black people can be the “true Israelites.” As if ‘Am Yisrael is a Marvel reboot with race-swapped casting rights.
Let’s be very clear: the Jewish people have never been a racially homogeneous group. Not in the Bible, not in the Talmudh, not during the Geonic era, and definitely not in the age of WhatsApp and DNA kits.
As someone who leads a Black Jewish community—and who has also served Ashkenazi congregations in New Jersey and New York—I’ve heard it all. From “You can’t be Jewish, you’re Black,” to “You can’t be Black, you’re Jewish.” To which I say: pick a struggle.
Black Hebrew Israelites ≠ Black Jews
Let’s clear up another confusion: Black Jews and Black Hebrew Israelites are not interchangeable. Some Hebrew Israelites believe they alone descend from the “real” Israelites and that other Jews—especially white ones—are imposters. Many reject rabbinic Judaism entirely.
Black Jews, by contrast, include converts and born Jews alike, raised in Observant, or other Jewish communities. We pray from siddurim, read parshiyoth, and keep halakha. We are not trying to replace anyone—we’re just trying to daven in peace without someone questioning our DNA every Shabbath.
Black Jews are not a monolith. Some are Ashkenazi. Some are Sephardi. Some are converts. Some are descended from Ethiopian, Ugandan, Nigerian, or Caribbean Jewish communities, maintaining their minhagim. And guess what? They’re all legitimate.
Jews: A Global People Since Genesis
Open a TaN”kh. We didn’t start in Warsaw—we started in Ur. Avraham Avinu was a Mesopotamian. Moshe was born in Egypt, raised by Africans, and according to some—married a Cushite woman. The tribes of Israel had names like Gad and Naphtali, not Goldberg and Horowitz.
Fast forward through history, and we’ve got Jews from Ethiopia (Beta Israel), India (Bene Israel and Cochin), Persia, Yemen, Morocco, Iraq, Uganda, Nigeria, and even China. Some prayed in Arabic, others in Judeo-Malayalam, some in Ge’ez, others in Ladino. Some had skin the color of parchment; others, the color of polished mahogany.
So the next time someone says “All Jews are white,” tell them: not only is that wrong—it’s cray, cray (crazy).
And no, white Jews aren’t “fake,” either. Ashkenazi Jews endured centuries of persecution, exile, and forced assimilation in Europe. They were Jews despite whiteness, not because of it. Whiteness was never a birthright—it was a passport some Jews were grudgingly handed and are now watching be revoked, one antisemitic conspiracy at a time.
Melanin in Midrash: Torah and Talmudh Speak
Let’s get textual.
Ever heard the phrase “black and beautiful”? It’s not from Beyoncé—it’s from Shir HaShirim (1:5):
שְׁחוֹרָה אֲנִי וְנָאוָה –
“I am Black and beautiful.”
Yes, it’s in your TaN”Kh. Right next to verses comparing the beloved to a date palm and pomegranate. And if you think the sages ignored that verse, think again.
In Pirqé D’Rabbi Eliezer 24, a classic midrashic collection, we’re told:
“ברך נח לבניו… ברך לשם ולבניו שחורים ונאים… ברך לחם ובניו שחורים כעורב…”
“Noah blessed his sons… He blessed Shem and his sons, making them Black and beautiful… He blessed Ḥam and his sons, making them Black like a raven…”
That’s right. Shem—the progenitor of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and the entire people of Israel—is described as Black and beautiful. Not metaphorically. Not spiritually. Literally.
And then there’s Mishnah Negaim 2:1, where Rabbi Ishmael explains how skin disease is diagnosed relative to the skin tone of the Israelite population:
“שֶׁצְּבוּעַ בָּרוּשׁ וְכָעוֹר שֶׁל בֵּית הַשְּׁכֵּרָא – כְּגוֹן בֵּן נִיגְעֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל.”
“The Israelites are neither too pale nor too dark, but like the color of boxwood or the bark of the ashkeroa tree.”
Translation? Brown. Not “Aryan glow,” not “Nordic porcelain”—brown. Tanned. Olive. Bronze. Not unlike modern Middle Easterners or North Africans today.
Even Resh Laqish, the famously bold and brawling amora of the Talmudh, had a thing to say about color diversity:
אָמַר רֵישׁ לָקִישׁ: לָבָן לֹא יִשָּׂא לְבָנָה — שֶׁמָּא יֵצֵא מֵהֶם בּוֹהֵק, שָׁחוֹר לֹא יִשָּׂא שְׁחוֹרָה — שֶׁמָּא יֵצֵא מֵהֶן טָפוּחַ.
“A light-skinned man should not marry a light-skinned woman—lest they produce a child too pale; a dark-skinned man should not marry a dark-skinned woman—lest their child come out too dark.”
— TB Bekhoroth 45b
That may sound color-conscious, but it clearly shows that Jews of extremely different complexions—from the fairest lily white, to the darkest chocolate brown —existed in ancient Israel. Our skin tones were already a spectrum long before Crayola got the memo.
And what about global Jewry? Let’s talk Indian Bene Israel Jews, Arab-speaking Mizraḥim, Ethiopian Beta Israel, Chinese Kaifeng Jews, and Igbo Jews of Nigeria. We’ve been everywhere, looking like everyone—long before Ancestry.com or Zionist passport photos.
Today, you simply cannot define a Jew by color. Only by commitment—to Torah, to miṣwoth, and to one another.
Halakhically speaking, being born to a Jewish mother or converting through a valid beth din makes you Jewish. Period. No DNA test kit required.
The RaMB”M Was Not Racist—Your Translator Might Be
Let’s be clear: racism is a problem. And misrepresenting Torah scholars to support it? A bigger one.
Take the oft-misquoted RaMB”M, accused by some of calling Black people “less than human.” That quote? A mistranslation.
In Moreh Nevukhim 3:51, RaMB”M actually writes—in good ol’ Judeo-Arabic:
אלתרוכ אלמתוג’לין פי אלשמאל ואלסודאן אלמתוג’לין פי אלג’נוב
(al-Turk al-mutaǧawwalīn fī al-shamāl wa-al-Sūdān al-mutaǧawwalīn fī al-ǧanūb)
الترك المتجولين في الشمال والسودان المتجولين في الجنوب
Translation? “The nomadic Turks in the north and the nomadic Sudanese in the south.”
That’s right: nomads, not races. RaMB”M wasn’t launching into a diatribe about skin tone. He was criticizing groups—of any color—who, in his view, lacked settled civilization or philosophical sophistication. A classic medieval move, not a Mel Gibson moment.
But somewhere along the translation trail, someone swapped out “Sudanese” for “Negroes” or “Blacks,” while conveniently leaving “Turks” untouched. Curious, no?
If “Sudanese” equals Black, then “Turks” equals White—and either RaMB”M hated everyone north and south of Cairo, or (brace yourself)… he was talking about social conditions, not skin color.
How Can You Convert to Whiteness?
Judaism has always been about covenant, not complexion. Ruth the Moabite wasn’t born Jewish—she chose it. The Israelites left Egypt as a mixed multitude (Exodus 12:38). Ethiopian Jews were recognized by many Israeli rabbis not because of DNA, but because of halakhic inquiry, historical memory, and communal testimony. This criteria must be the benchmark for all in the diaspora.
Judaism is not a race. It’s a family. A faith. A people forged at Sinai, not in a petri dish.
The only real Jew is the one who wrestles with Gd—and wins, or at least lives to argue about it.
As the Torah says:
וְעַתָּה יִשְׂרָאֵל מָה ה׳ אֱלֹהֶיךָ שֹׁאֵל מֵעִמָּךְ…
“And now, O Israel, what does the HaShem your Gd ask of you, if not to revere Him, walk in His ways, and love Him…”

No race test. No melanin check. Just miṣwoth.
Final Thought: Let My People Hue
The Torah wasn’t given in Warsaw, Brooklyn, or Boca. It was given in the Sinai wilderness—a dusty, sun-drenched place where melanin wasn’t a social marker but a survival necessity.
So let’s put to rest this fantasy that Jews are, or were ever, all white. That erases Ethiopian Jews, Mizraḥi Jews, Sephardim, and yes, Black American Jews who live Torah every day. And let’s stop pretending that whiteness is a prerequisite for Jewish legitimacy—or Blackness a disqualifier.

Ultimately, Traditional Jewish communities in the USA have a long IndiJewnous perspective, seeing themselves as temporarily residing in the Host Country which is currently favorable but which could turn on them (us) at any time. Overnight, Israel launched Operation Gideon’s Chariots. It marks the latest, bloody phase of the war Hamas launched on October 7, 2023 with a barbaric massacre of Israeli civilians, an attack that triggered a regional war against the Jewish state on seven fronts.
The Israeli operation is intended to end the war with the defeat of the terrorist army that started the war. It has two goals: to pressure Hamas to free the hostages, and then to crush this enemy regime and its military.
I want this war to end, and so I want this operation to succeed. But tonight, I am conflicted. And before I explain why I’m conflicted, I’ll explain why I’m sharing.
When Hamas declared war, I was not a spokesman for the Israeli Government. On the contrary. I was one of the many Israelis protesting against the Netanyahu government (the photo evidence would be my undoing). But then everything changed, we united as a country, and I put politics aside. The country needed cannon fodder in hostile interviews and I jumped on the grenade. Eventually Mrs. Netanyahu clocked that I was in the anti-government protests before the war and I was forced out. But that’s another story.
I mention this to explain that not only do I not represent the government, I also owe nothing to this government (I have never even met Netanyahu, if you can believe it). I see my role now — as a private citizen — as not to defend the government’s decisions, but to explain the impossible and agonizing dilemmas facing Israel. I don’t care if you agree with this or that decision. I care that you understand the impossible situation we’re in.
Right now, there are up to 23 living hostages rotting in the dungeons of Gaza, where they are being starved, tortured, and even sexually abused. There are also 35 bodies of hostages Hamas has already murdered, using as chips to torture their families. We need to get them all out. They could have been any one of us. It could have been me, or my friends. Families ripped out of their beds. Youngsters kidnapped from a music festival. Young conscript soldiers, seized from defensive posts.
Hamas is demanding a ransom for their release.
It is demanding the release of thousands of convicted terrorists and an end of the war, with international guarantees that it can remain in power. There is a horrific debate in Israel about whether we can afford this ransom. The Netanyahu government has decided we cannot. Many Israelis think we should pay it anyway, to save them. It is insane that we’re having a debate about the price of our fellow citizens’ lives, but Hamas is demanding a price, so we’re forced to decide what it is.
Most of the hostages’ families want the government to pay the ransom. It is a core, unshakable part of the Israeli ethos that we do not leave anyone behind. You don’t abandon a wounded soldier in the field. And definitely not a civilian snatched from his bed. As they’re saying in the rally tonight in Tel Aviv, “nothing else matters right now”. Save them now, worry about the costs later. If someone in my family were abducted, I would demand the same. Nothing else matters. And if I were in power, I would probably pay the ransom (I would also order a state commission of inquiry, but that is another matter). We have been checkmated. We will never forgive ourselves if we fail to bring our fellow citizens. It will break our social contract. Hamas knows that, of course, and that’s why it exploits our greatest strength, our sense of solidarity, as our Achilles’ heel.
This ransom comes at a cost, and this point is worth hammering. The terrorists we release from jail WILL take hostages in future, because we are showing it works. There is a reason most countries don’t pay ransoms to terrorist hostage-takers. We got soldier Gilad Shalit back for 1,000 terrorists in 2011; one of them was Yahya Sinwar. Hamas is demanding the hostage-takers of tomorrow for the hostages of today. And ending the war with Hamas in power means Hamas will remain in power and will rearm. Anyone telling you that ending the war with Hamas in power means it won’t remain in power is not being entirely honest with you. Hamas is not going to disarm itself or resign voluntarily. Saudi Arabia isn’t going to coax it to quit. And nobody is going to condition reconstruction aid on Hamas laying down its arms. In any case, Phase III of the original ransom deal would allow Hamas to hold onto the bodies of dead hostages anyway during reconstruction, guaranteeing that rebuilding will take place on its terms.
Leaving Hamas standing means it will rebuild its tunnels and its missile silos. And it will attack when it’s ready. Because Hamas is a jihadi army whose stated purpose for existence is to wage war until Israel is destroyed. There’s no such thing as a “permanent ceasefire”. If this is not the last Gaza war, there will be a next Gaza war, and it will be worse. Why? Because Hamas will conclude the world will keep saving it from the wars it starts. Because its human shield strategy will be vindicated. Because it will take hostages again, knowing this is our Achilles’ heel. And we want this to be the last Gaza war, because we’re sick of war and want no more fighting. It’s just not true, as some have written, that “total victory” is some far-right fantasy. The policy of containment that Netanyahu led before the war failed. We’re not going back to it. We cannot live with this terror state on our borders, or the next war is a matter of time. Enough war.
The Netanyahu government has decided that we cannot pay this ransom, and so Operation Gideon’s Chariot is intended to get us better terms. Military pressure is the only leverage we have over Hamas, besides controlling the entry of supplies into Gaza, which is its main pipeline. Other countries have leverage over Hamas — via its patrons, Qatar, Turkey, and Iran — but they’re not using it. Because they’re craven and venal, and money speaks loudest. We’ll deal with that later. The operation is also intended to end the game of “cat and mouse” that has seen Israeli soldiers recapturing areas we have already withdrawn from: push Hamas out once, and then keep it out until it is crushed like ISIS was crushed.
So why am I conflicted? Because I think everyone’s right. I think the minority of hostage families supporting military pressure are right that this is the only leverage we have to get our hostages back (other than paying the ransom that leaves it in power). And I think the majority of hostage families who say that a military campaign endangers the hostages are also right. Hamas could conclude the hostages are worthless and execute them, like it has executed so many before. It’s possible that the only leverage we have to get the hostages out is also extremely risky for them. I think the people who say that bringing the hostages back is the #1 priority are right, and I think those who say that leaving Hamas in power as the price for getting them back guarantees future war are also right. We have no good choices. We can’t afford to pay this ransom, and we also can’t afford not to.
As an Israeli, I fear a future in which those hostages are abandoned to die in Gaza. I also fear a future in which Hamas regroups to plot the next October 7 Massacre.
I want to be proven wrong. If I have analyzed the dilemmas wrong, please tell me. If there’s another way out, tell me. The cognitive dissonance is killing me.

A third-party mediator operated a backchannel between the United States and Hamas that helped secure the agreement to release American-Israeli hostage Edan Alexander, a source familiar with the matter and a Palestinian official revealed to The Times of Israel on Sunday.
The backchannel was operated by a non-governmental individual who passed along messages between Hamas’s leadership in Qatar and US special envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff, the sources said, while declining to reveal the identity of the person on the record.
The backchannel was opened last month, with the person urging Hamas to release Alexander unconditionally, telling the terror group that the move would go a long way with the Trump administration and potentially open the door to Washington coaxing Israel to agree to a deal that would bring about an end to the war in Gaza in exchange for the release of the remaining hostages — a trade Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has until now rejected, arguing that it would leave Hamas in power.
Hamas for weeks pushed back against freeing Alexander unconditionally and presented the third-party backchannel with proposals that would have seen Israel take various steps in exchange for the 21-year-old’s release.
The go-between warned Hamas last week that such offers wouldn’t fly and that time was not on the group’s side, with Israel planning to launch a major operation to gradually re-occupy the entire Gaza Strip once US President Donald Trump wraps up his trip to the region on Friday. Trump will depart on Monday for Saudi Arabia before making stops in Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. He is not slated to visit Israel on this trip.
Over the weekend, Hamas informed the go-between that it had agreed to release Alexander unconditionally but wanted Witkoff to know that the step should not be viewed as a one-off, the sources said. Hamas stressed to the mediator that it was ready to work with the Trump administration to secure a permanent ceasefire in Gaza with security arrangements in order to ensure a yearslong calm until a final settlement of the conflict is reached, the sources said.
Hamas also told the US via the backchannel that it needed to locate Alexander. Last month, it released a propaganda video showing Alexander alive. Two days later, the group claimed it had lost contact with his captors after an Israeli airstrike.
On Sunday, Hamas told the mediator that it had found Alexander and was prepared to move ahead with his release. The negotiator, in turn told Hamas to inform Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani of the decision. The Qatari premier then called Witkoff to confirm that Alexander’s release would be moving ahead.
Witkoff then called Netanyahu and Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer to inform them of the development, the US official said. Israel then agreed to temporary halt some of its military operations, including drone surveillance of the Strip in the lead-up and during Alexander’s release on Monday, the source familiar with the matter said.
After receiving the news from Witkoff, Alexander’s parents took off for Israel from the US on Sunday night and were accompanied by US hostage envoy Adam Boehler.
Netanyahu’s office issued a statement early Monday morning claiming that Alexander’s release was made possible due to Israel’s military pressure in Gaza. It stressed that Israel did not agree to a ceasefire or to release Palestinian prisoners in exchange for Alexander — only to provide a safe corridor to allow for his release.
In an earlier statement attributed to an “Israeli official,” Netanyahu’s office said that it was still prepared to accept the so-called “Witkoff proposal” through which Hamas agrees to release half of the hostages up front in exchange for a weekslong truce during which the sides agree to hold talks on the terms of a permanent end to the war.
Such talks were supposed to have been held during the previous agreement that the sides signed in January, but Netanyahu largely refused to engage in such negotiations, amid pressure from his far-right coalition partners who threatened to collapse his government if he agreed to end the war.
Accordingly, Hamas has insisted on ironclad guarantees, such as a UN Security Council resolution, in order to ensure that Israel holds those talks and agrees to end the war.
In addition to releasing the hostages, Israel is demanding that Hamas dismantle its governing and military capabilities. While the group has said it is prepared to forgo control of the Strip to an independent committee of Palestinian technocrats, it has held off on the demand to permanently disarm.
