For those seeking to colonisplain the history of b’nei Israel to the Jewish people of the Canaan land of Israel, some easily verifiable historical facts:
The Jewish people had our Indigenous people’s foundational moment in Moab, and we pushed the Phoenicians (the “Canaanites” of Torah) northward and established the dual kingdoms of Israel north of Moab and across the river to the sea.
The only remaining Canaan people still alive today are the Jewish people of/from our Canaan land of Israel. The rest of the peoples of Canaan have all been assimilated out of existence. Initially by regional colonizers such as Assyria, Babylon (before Cyrus), Greece, and Rome. Assyria forcibly converted the northern kingdom of Israel into Assyrians and impaled the rest along Judah’s border, hence the lament of the “lost tribes” in our ancestral writings, the Torah. Rabbi Ysoscher Katz shared, “To Be a Fly On The Wall At Yesterday’s Debate At The Celestial Yeshiva.
As a billion catholics down here were saying their final goodbyes to Pope Francis, up in heaven they were getting ready to say hello to him.

1) God
“Rabosai, the Catholic Pope is making his way heavenward. He will be arriving very soon and we need to determine his halakhic status.
While I might have my own views, you have long ago determined that my opinion doesn’t have dispositive weight; torah lo ba’shamayim. I am therefore here to learn from you, what do you think is the status of a christian believer in God?”
2) Maimonides (1138-1204)
Without hesitation, Maimonides got up, his voice quivering with anger, he pronounced:
“Seriously, is this even a question?! Of course he’s guilty of idolatry. Belief in the trinity is idolatrous, thus branding any believer in Catholicism a heretic.”
And with that he sat down, seemingly quite shaken that such a question would even come up.
3) Meiri (1249-1315)
Shaking impatiently throughout Maimonides’ proclamation, as soon as Rambam sat down the Meiri got up. While usually a Rambam acolyte, this time he vehemently disagreed with him.

Next up was R. Tam. Looking a bit tired and frail, he spoke haltingly. he said:

5) R. Yakov Emden (1697-1776)
That was followed by a wordy but eloquent speech by R Yakov Emden in which he extolled the virtues of christianity and its role in making the world better, holier and more just. He gushingly praised the New Testament’s contribution to justice, ethics and morality.
6) Rav Kook
Last to speak was Rav Kook. He said:
“I don’t have a positive view on christianity, but the founder of Christianity was a person with a great soul.” (Later at kiddush, he tried to claim that he was misunderstood and that he did not mean to be complementary of Jesus. Some in the audience were a bit skeptical about his mea culpa.)
And then the Beit Midrash fell silent, a hush filled the room.
God waited patiently. Finally, after five minutes of deafening silence God said:
Well, once again I have to wonder: was it a mistake to leave halakhic decisions in the hands of humans? They almost never come to an agreement, especially on the weighty issues.”
That is when the (relatively) recently deceased Rav Shagar popped up.
“With utmost awe and deference, HKBH, I beg to differ. The beauty of Halakha’s is its multivocality. That is what a torat chaim looks like. It is vibrant, alive, and multi-dimensional.”
“True dat,” HKBH conceded.
And with that the conversation was over.
“Gut shabbos, Gut shabbos” HKBH said, as He turned toward the door, and the entire yeshiva shel ma’alah responded in kind: a gutten shabbos, tatenu”!”
Our take on this is that Pope Francis is destined for an endless pergutory, unless our Celestial Yeshiva reaches a ruling on this! 🙂 He is honored for being a righteous person,… while also being a devout antisemite (with Jewish friends).
