Palestinians, like all Arab and European settlers occupiers of Indigenous peoples\u2019 lands not theirs, are masters at Apartheid and social narrative inversion spin. Israel, though, being the last still surviving and STILL unassimilated Canaan indigenous nation, utterly sucks at Apartheid and is desperately outnumbered by Europeans and Arabs that insist upon speaking for us about us!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Israel<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

\u201cApartheid was the policy by which the government of South Africa repressed its black citizens from 1948 to 1994. The word apartheid comes from an Afrikaans phrase meaning \u201capart-hood\u201d or separateness.(420) And South African apartheid was, in fact, marked by systemic separateness\u2014starting with a sweeping anti-miscegenation law (preventing black people from marrying white people) and culminating in a society-wide caste system, by which black people were prevented from eating at the same restaurants, attending the same schools, swimming at the same beaches, or belonging to the same clubs as white people. None of this is true of Israel. Just the opposite: Israel is a country of some ten million people, more than 21 percent of whom are Arab Israelis\u2014Muslim, Christian, and Druze\u2014with full political, civil, and commercial rights.(421)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLet\u2019s start with political rights. Israel\u2019s Declaration of Independence, promulgated on the day of the country\u2019s founding (May 14, 1948), declared that all Israeli citizens\u2014including its now approximately two million Arab citizens\u2014are entitled to equal rights under Israeli law:(422) \u201cThe State of Israel,\u201d the Declaration promised, \u201cwill ensure complete equality of social and political rights to all its inhabitants irrespective of religion, race or sex; it will guarantee freedom of religion, conscience, language, education and culture[.]\u201d(423) And subsequent Israeli governments have passed specific laws that formalized this basic tenet of Israeli society.(424) In 2000, for example, the Knesset amended Article 15 of the Civil Service Law (Appointments) to provide affirmative action for Arab citizens in the civil service.(425) And, in the mid-2000s, four major Israeli universities instituted class-based affirmative action policies that often benefit Arab (and other minority) communities.(426) Let\u2019s be clear about what these laws and policies mean: The State of Israel and its major academic institutions have adopted affirmative action policies that often benefit Arab citizens in civil-service selections and university admissions. That\u2019s the very opposite of apartheid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIsrael\u2019s Muslim population also votes in Israeli elections, forms its own political parties, and sends representatives as full-fledged voting members to the Knesset (the Israeli parliament).(427) Indeed, as of this writing, of the 120 Knesset members, ten are Arab Israelis\u2014each of whose votes counts as much as the vote of any Jewish Knesset member.(428) In 2021, in fact, an Arab party was included in the ruling coalition of Naftali Bennett and Yair Lapid\u2014meaning that Arab Muslims were involved in the governance of the State of Israel.(429) That\u2019s nothing like apartheid-era South Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut Arab-Israeli political rights aren\u2019t confined to the Knesset. The Israeli Supreme Court\u2014the most powerful and influential jurists in the land, charged with the power to declare acts of the Israeli Knesset unconstitutional\u2014traditionally includes an Arab justice (currently Khaled Kabub).(430) It\u2019s thus no surprise that Arab Israelis enjoy the freedom to speak, to practice their religion, to protest the government\u2019s policies, and to assemble\u2014all rights no oppressive (much less apartheid) regime would tolerate.(431) In apartheid South Africa, for example, the vast majority of the country\u2019s citizens were black, but voting rights and political power rested exclusively with the tiny white minority.(432) In Israel, by contrast, the right to vote, to run for office, to hold office in the Knesset or in municipal government, and to serve as a judge in the court system (including on the highest court in the land) belongs equally to all citizens\u2014white or black, Muslim, Jewish, Druze, or Christian.(433)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cArab Israelis also enjoy equal civil rights. They receive free healthcare and state-funded education\u2014just as any Jewish citizen does.(434) They have equal access to the courts and can seek redress for any violation of their civil liberties.(435) If they get into trouble, they\u2019re entitled to counsel (paid for by the State of Israel), and they receive all the same due-process guarantees (including a neutral judge and the presumption of innocence) that any Jewish defendant would get.(436) They can marry whomever they wish, divorce if they want, have children with whomever they choose, educate their offspring as they please, attend religious services whenever and however they prefer, and frequent any establishment\u2014including any beach, restaurant, taxi, train, or social club\u2014on equal terms with any Jewish citizen.(437)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMost importantly, Israel practices religious tolerance on a level unseen anywhere else in the Middle East. So, for instance, anyone who has been to Nazareth\u2014where Jesus became a well-known rabbi and preacher\u2014will have noticed that the vast majority of its seventy-seven thousand (or so) citizens are Muslim, many of whom pray freely and openly on their prayer rugs five times a day in the Jewish State of Israel. The Israeli government even included beautiful and spacious Christian and Muslim prayer rooms alongside its Jewish synagogue inside the magnificent, state-of-the-art national library it unveiled in October 2023\u2014a library that includes thousands of rare manuscripts and books on Islam written in Arabic, Persian, and Turkish. Israel is also home to an important Bah\u00e1\u2019\u00ed community (mainly in Haifa)\u2014a community that was widely persecuted in its native Iran and which emigrated to Israel precisely because of its religious openness. If Israel is an apartheid state, it\u2019s done a very poor job of creating the kind of separateness apartheid requires.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
