This full moon \ud83c\udf15 features a very rare 3 day version of our ancient Jewish festival \u2721\ufe0f of Purim. Purim celebrates diaspora Jews in Achaemenid Persia surviving a historical BCE pogrom that occurred before 519 BCE. The Megillah that we chant during Purim is a historical fiction that preserves this ancestral memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Purim is a festival about Indigenous resistance and survival!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
The name Purim, the festival of \u201clots\u201d, is derived from the Akkadian word \u201cp\u016br\u016b\u201d, which references a naming ritual for the Persian new year \u2013 which was originally decided by casting dice inscribed with names. Within the Esther and Mordecai \u201cpalace intrigue\u201d story of the Jewish people, the p\u016br\u016b is used by Haman to determine the day that he would attack and slaughter the Jews living in Persia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There are actually two palace intrigue story plot lines in the Megillah. One is Esther\u2019s heroic manipulation of King Ahasuerus to save the Jews from Haman\u2019s planned genocide, and the other is Mordechai\u2019s refusal to bow in submission to Haman \u2013 with this sending Haman into a rage of wanting to impale Mordechai for his insolence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Purim story ends with Queen Esther saving the Jews in Persia and Haman being impaled on his own stick planned for Mordechai. \u201cLots\u201d have been cast and plots, then, unfold. The custom of masquerading in costumes and the wearing of masks was introduced to Middle Eastern Jews during the 19th century CE. Iranian Jews use traditional Persian costumes and masks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Book of Esther prescribes \u201cthe sending of portions [food] one man to another, and gifts to the poor\u201d. Mishloach manot is meant to ensure that everyone has enough food for the Purim feast held later in the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First a brief preface:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In spite of God\u2019s absence in Megilat Esther, the book is laden with religious and spiritual motifs. But that smogesboard of motifs doesn\u2019t always carry the same significance, they are culturally contingent. The contemporary cultural and communal reality at the time when it is read informs which motifs are highlighted and which ones are ignored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In light of that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This years motif is articulated in Chapter 4 verse 14: \u05e8\u05d5\u05d5\u05d7 \u05d5\u05d4\u05e6\u05dc\u05d4 \u05d9\u05e2\u05de\u05d5\u05d3 \u05dc\u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d3\u05d9\u05dd \u05de\u05de\u05e7\u05d5\u05dd \u05d0\u05d7\u05d3<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cRELIEF AND DELIVERANCE WILL ARRIVE FROM SOME PLACE\u201d! (We don\u2019t know where that mysterious \u201dplace\u201d is but it undoubtedly exists, Mordechai proclaims.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This emphatic faith proclamation was articulated many many years ago, but it could not be more resonant today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Things look very bleak at the moment. There is death, terror and carnage everywhere; \u05de\u05d7\u05d5\u05e5 \u05ea\u05e9\u05db\u05dc \u05d7\u05e8\u05d1 \u05d5\u05de\u05d7\u05d3\u05e8\u05d9\u05dd \u05d0\u05d9\u05de\u05d4. Israelis experience constant terror, and we in the diaspora live in perpetual fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And yet \u2026 we believe, nay, we know, that this is only a transitional phase\u2013the birth pangs of something far greater, better and safer. We don\u2019t know exactly how that change will come about but that is exactly the message of the megillah. Jewish history is strewn with moments like this, when everything looks so bleak and hopeless, but God nevertheless comes through, in the most unexpected ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NOW, this was in the BCE PERIOD of human history!
