On July 9, 2005, Iranian security forces brutally murdered Shivan Qaderi, a 26-year-old Kurdish man from Mahabad, and then tied his body to a military vehicle and dragged it around Mahabad in an attempt to intimidate the Kurds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the next day tens of thousands of Mahabad Kurds took to the streets and chanted anti-regime slogans such as \u201cDown with Khamenei.\u201d For the next three weeks protests erupted across Iranian Kurdistan including in Mahabad, Sanandaj, Sardasht, Piranshahr, Shino, Bana, Bokan, and Saqiz, resulting in up to 20 protestors dead and more than 300 wounded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
