The Papal Bull of 1452 justified Portugal\u2019s right to attack, conquer and enslave \u201cSaracens and pagans\u201d for the \u201cintegrity and spread of the faith, for which Christ our God shed his blood\u201d. It also justified the Colonial acquisition of more African territory, but the same decree also provided a legal framework for sub-Saharan Africans to negotiate with Iberian authorities on equal footing, and to make claims of their own, should they convert to Christianity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Papal Bull of 1456 from Pope Calixtus III reaffirmed the earlier bulls Dum Diversas and Romanus Pontifex, thus legitimizing Portugal\u2019s rights to territories it had discovered along the West African coast, and the reduction of the infidels and non-Christians territories to perpetual vassals of the Christian monarch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Papal Bull of 1478 from Pope Sixtus IV, Exigit Sincerae Devotionis Affectus, authorized the Spanish Inquisition that was established in the Kingdom of Castile. The Tribunal of the Holy Office of the Inquisition was established in 1478 by the Catholic Monarchs, King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Queen Isabella I of Castile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Decreto de la Alhambra of 1492 ordered the expulsion of unconverted Jews from the Crowns of Castile and Aragon and its territories and possessions. The reasoning was to eliminate the influence of native Jews on Spain\u2019s large formerly-Jewish converso \u201cNew Christian\u201d population, to ensure the latter and their descendants did not revert back to indigenous Judaism (Judea-people-ism ways).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over half of Spain\u2019s Jews had converted, as a result of the religious persecution and pogroms which occurred in 1391, and the Inquisition was intended to identify heretics among those who converted from Judaism and Islam to Catholicism. With the royal decrees issued in 1492 and 1502, Jews and Muslims were ordered to convert to Catholicism or leave Castile, or face death. This resulted in hundreds of thousands of forced conversions, the persecution of conversos and moriscos, death sentences, and the mass expulsions of Jews and of Muslims from Spain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Papal Bull of 1493, the Inter Caetera issued by Pope Alexander VI, granted to the Catholic Monarchs King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Queen Isabella I of Castile all lands to the \u201cwest and south\u201d of a pole-to-pole line 100 leagues west and south of any of the islands of the Azores or the Cape Verde islands. The Seer of Lublin once spent a Shabbat with Rabbi Barukh of Mezhbizh, the grandson of the Baal Shem Tov. On Shabbos afternoon, when the family was having lunch together, the Seer was seated next to one of Rabbi Barukh\u2019s daughters. The Seer was not happy since he felt that it was not tzanuah (modest) for a woman to be seated next to him. According to the story, R. Barukh sensed the Seer\u2019s thoughts and angrily asked him why he was upset adding \u201cthe verse (Psalms 119:37) states: \u05d4\u05e2\u05d1\u05e8 \u05e2\u05d9\u05e0\u05d9 \u05de\u05e8\u05d0\u05d5\u05ea \u05e9\u05d5\u05d0; avert my eyes from seeing falsehood. It says \u201cavert my eyes from the falsehood,\u201d it does not say \u201cavert the falsehood from my eyes.\u201d In other words, why are you angry at my daughter? This story offers a novel approach to tzniut and is buttressed by what we are told in this week\u2019s parsha and learned in the most recent dapim of Bava Batra . The Rebbe of Mezhbizh argues that preventing temptation is not the sole responsibility of the woman. According to his reading of the verse in Psalms quoted above, the recipe for creating a holy community does not require keeping women out of sight. Rather, it is the responsibility of the one who is tempted to avert his eyes and avoid temptation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
